Amid scenes wbiob promised some excitement, but wbiob pnded rather ignominiously, Triangle Camp at Piaistow was lost, retaken, and again lost by tbe unemployed on Saturday, August 4th. It will be remembered that land was seized by some thirty unemployed under the leadership of Councillor Cunningham of West flam. Crops were planted, and tbe men hoped tu make a living by selling tbe vegetables grown on the land. Soon after seven o'clock in the 1 morning a large FORCE OP POLICE! gathered, and Mr Hlain, the road foreman, appeared with some twelve men on a West Ham Corporation van,-wbiob drove right into the camp up to a dozen unemployed gathered round tent. The proceedings were brief. Within a few minutes tbe whole oonstruotion was pulled down, but when the red f flag reached the ground Councillor Cunningham, who had now come on the scene, picked, it up and ran round the camp, pursued by Mr Wlain aud several policemen. Caught in a corner, he threw himself on the ground, and, still, CLUTCHING THiri P.ED *LAQ, he was lifted by six men, carried through tbe gate, aud thrown on to the road. Their leader vanquished, the remainder of the campers dejectedly walked off the ground and ereoted their tent on the neighbouring plot belonging to Mr Mcßean. The Chmp gates were looked and a fcroe of police put on. guard, rs In the afternoon, however, some young men entered the grounds from some adjoining gardens, and when they began to erect a tent the police realised that the Triangle Camp had been retaken. The new occupancy was shortlived. A Bbort scufille ensued, and four men were arrested, two or three people being injured rather severely.
