WAIRARAPA CALEDONIAN SOCIETY.
MEETING OF DIRECTORS. A meeting of the Directors of the Wairarapa Caledonian Sooiety was held on Saturday. Mr J. B. MoKenzio occupied the chair and there were also present—Messsrß J. Cross, T. P. Lett, J. McLean, E. H. Waddington, A. Mutrie, D. MoLaohlan, E. E. Chamberlain, J. McHattie, J. O. MoKillot and J. McKenzie. Mr Arch. Clarke wrote resigning his position as a director of the Society. Dr. Cowie and Mr J, Millar were elected members of the Sooiety: Mr Cross brought up the case of a well-known Scottish piper iu Wanganui who was in low financial oiroumstauoes owing to ill-health. The Wangauui Caledonian Society were making tne appeal on behalf of the piper in question. It was proposed to make him a presentation of a purse of sovereigns. The Chairman and Secretary, were appointed a Committee to make enquiries into the case, ana vote any sum thought neoesiary as a donation. It was decided to write to Mr A. W. Hogg, M.H.R., asking him to protest against the Government granting » subsidy towards the Scottish Society's sports, whioh were to bo held during the Exhibition on January Ist aud 2nd, 1907. It was pointed out that the laveroargill, Oaraaru, Dunedin, and Timaru Societies were protesting in the matter, as it would be detrimental to the Societies, whioh had been in existence tor a great nurrber of years. Mr Cross asked that a vote of the members present be taken on the question of whether it is desirable to continue the publican's booth at the gathering of the Sooiety on the Park Oval. He contended that tho Maßtertou Sooiety was the only Sooiety in Now Zealand that allowed liquor to be sold at its sports gatherings and that the use of drink at the gatherings was a slur on the Sooiety. He believed that the Society had sold their Isst drink in the Park. Before the next sports meetiug either the Borough Council or the Lioensiug Committee would have taken steps to prohibit th'e sale of drink ut the Park. He did not think tho Sooiety would lose any money by prohibiting the publican's booth at the sports. If there was any loss to the Society he with others would cladly guarantee to find the money lost. The Chairman considered that the matter was one for the annual meet ing of members to deal with. Accordingly Mr Cross gave notice to move at the annual meeting that a vote of the members be taken as to whether it is desirable to oontiuue tne publioan's booth on the Park during sports gatherings. ■ "' V" h
