THE MANAWATU RAILWAY.
PROPOSED PURCHASE BY THE GOVERNMENT. MASTERTON COUNTY COUNCIL TO ASSIST THE MOVEMENT. A letter'was received at the meeting of the Masterton County Council, yesterday, from the Palroerston North Chamber of Commerce asking the Council to send representatives "to form a destination to > wait on the Minister for Railways and the Premier to urge on the Government to give notice to take over the VVel-liugton-Mauavvatu Railway." Ors Toogood and Guild favoured the Government taking over the line as stook oould be more easily and safely sont via (he Manawatu route to Wellington than over the Rinzutaba incline. The present heavy freights might also be done away with if the Manawatu used for the conveyance of stook and goods. "It will undoubtedly be a benefit to this district," said Or Toogood. "Do you think so?" queried Or Welch. Finally, on the motion of Or Toogood, seconded by Cr Guild, the Ohairnran (Or Cookburn-Hood) was appointed to represent the Oounoil on any deputation that might wait on the Government in connection with the matter.
