MAURICEVILLE COUNTY COUNCIL.
Tbe Counoil met on Saturday last. Present— Ors J. C. Cooper (obairman), H. J. 0. A. Wall, 0. C. Jackson, J. F. Heoklcr and F. Kummer. The following among other correspondence was. received and dealt with:—From tbeSeoretary of tbe New Zealand Counties Association, intimating that owing to having been unable to obtain definite information respecting the Government's intention regarding Local Government Bills, it is still uncer tain when the conference of delegates Will be convened; from the Paymaster-General, advising payment of annual subsidy (£470) on general rates collected; from the Mayor of Wellington regarding the Seddon National Memorial Fund, requesting siets to be taken to obtain subscriptions to the Fund, and desiring to be informed whether the • Oounoil favoms the proposal to expend the fund in endowing scholarships, or on a Teohuioal University; from Mr D. H. Rutherford, asking permission to cart a few loads of gravel over the road to his residence during September, and when the weather is snob that the road will not suffer.—Permission was granted. Cr Heckler reported the terms upon which Mr F. A. Sheath had agreed to maintain part (27 chains exclusive of bridge) of Bowen Road, and the Clerk was instructed to prepare an agreement for Mr Sheath to sign. The question of appointing an inspector of roads was held over for further inquiry. The Clerk was instructed to charge Mis Carroll with balf the cost of repairing the seotion of JMangamahoe Road between her lime kiln and junction with the main road. It was resolved to fill up tbe drain at the officio and improve the access to the road, the broken pipes to be utilised fur the work as far as practicable. Consideration of the proposed Seddon Memorial was deferred until the next meeting of the Counoil. Or Dagg was authorised to deal , with the roadman's request to plant willows to prevent a slip on Dagg's I Road, and Cr Jackson will deal with 7 willows on Jackson's Road. Cr Kummer reported the result of the conference with the Ratepayers' Committee regarding the footpath' near Maurioeville Railway Station. All were agreed that the footpath should be on the side of tbe road next to the railway. The Railway Engineer was disposed to recommend tbe Department to allow soil to be taken to form the r footbpatb, and to bear the cost of shifting the fence. Cr Kummer suggested that the portion from Brodersen's Road to the station should be formed, but tbe kerting left until next year. The part from the Muddy Bridge to Brook's Road he considered the most argent. A long disouesion followed, and it was ultimately deoided to leave the construction of the footpath in the haods of Ors Jaokson, Heckler and Kummei-, with the assistance of the Ratepayers' Committee if they think such desirable. Accounts amounting to £96 5s Id were passed for payment. At the conclusion of tbe meeting the Chairman handed to the Clerk his resignation, as s member of the Oounoil, this step being taken in consequence of his having disposed of his property and being about to leave the distriot. The Chairman's resignation was accepted with regret, several Councillors expressing their appreciation of his services whilst a member of tbe local body. A meeting of tbe Oounoil was held shortly after the ordinary meeting, and Or Kummer was eleoted Chairman.
