The Master of Elibank, speaking at Linton, in Peeblesshire, said the Liberals had completed their campaign against Protection, and might tie compelled to enter a campaign 9gamdt the powerful Independent Jjabour or Socialist party, whioh had opened war on them. The real cleavage was between collectivism and individualism, and the Ooouermouth by-election had accentuated the growing feeling amongst the Liberals that unless the party stood on its own legs its very vitals would be consumed. fie predicted that if it fell between two stools and disappeared us an active force in British politics this would lead to the ruin jf British oummeioial snpremaoy in the world.
