MASTERTON ORCHESTRAL SOCIETY.
SECOND CONCERT. The Orchestral Society gave their second conaert of the third season in the Town Hall, last evening, tu a large and appreciative audience—undoubtedly the largest audienoe that has attended any of the Society's concerts. The singing of Miss O'Brien was greeted with wellmerited applause, her songs being Tosti's "Good-bye" and "G Dry Those Tears" (del Riego), the latter with a violin obligato very tastefully played by Mr Reibana Boyes. Miss O'Bripn was also deservedly enoored for her singing of "Twickenham Ferry" and "Slumber Sea," tbe latter a beautiful little lullaby. Mr Sydney Earee contributed a "Love Song," by Rev. Wyndham Earee, in a very pleasing manner. K character song, "When the Minister Came to Tea," was also given by Mr Earee, and was warmly applauded. In response to continued applause, he gave several dialect sketches, which were well received. The Orchestra are to be congratulated on the very flue selection of music given on this occasion. There was a very marked improvement in their playing. Several of the numbers were of an exacting nature, and must have had a great deal of bard practice bestowed upon them. Tbe .overture, Dame," wbb well rendered, and "Tannhauser Maroh," "Uhlan's Call," Weber's "Invitation a la valse" ana "La Machiche" were also very creditably rendered. The selection from "Faust" was only moderately well given, showing indeoision here and there on the part of the soloists. Mr H. Inns very pleasingly rendered a 'cello solo, "Simple Aveu," and was encored. The second time he repeated half of the item in an equally creditable manner. The string quartet, "Andante," by Messrs Boyes, McHattie, Winchester and Inns, was fairly well rendered, but the performers did not appear to manifest sufficient self-reliance. The Sooiety anticipate'giving the final concert of the seanon in November. Mr R. H. Ratbbone deserves a special word of praise for tbe aide manner in which he conducted the Orchestra. The sucoess of the concert was, in a large measure, due to the excellent work done by Mr Ratbbone.
