WELLINGTON v. SOUTHLAND.
WELLINGTON, August 22. The match Southland v. Wellington was played at Athletio Park, this afternoon, in the presence of between 3,500 and 4,900 spectators, including Lord and Lady Plunket. The ground was in canital order, and the weather was perfect. The local combination, which won easily by 22 points to 3, proved its superiority in the senond half, tbe visitors with few exceptions being kept busily repelling onslaughts by tbe opposing forces. The Wellington forwards swarmed over their opponents in tbe loose, and broke away repeatedly from the line, engineering rushes which took the ball down the field at a great bat. The Wellington back division was unable to bring its sooting powers into anything like full play, owing to the faulty play of Roberts (inside five-eighth), whose tactics lost at least half a dozen excellent chances of adding to his side's score. The Southland for wards played up solidly in the first spell, and secured possession, of the ball oftener, but thee backs failed to profit by the advantage, being content to find the touchline. After crossing over the Southland forwards were run off their feet by the pace set them by the local division. The scores in the first spell were:—Wellington 5 (a try scored by Thomson and converted by G. Spencer), Southland 3 (try registered by Clark), In the next halt Ramsden (2), Mitchinson, Hardham and Thomson touched down, G. Spencer adding the major I points from Ramsden's first try. The place-kicking was poor.
