THE EARTHQUAKE IN CHILI.
SCENES AT SANTIAGO AND VALPARAISO.
Received August 21, 9 a.m. LONDON, August 20. The Chilian Legation in London has received an official teleeram, which minimises the damage to property and tbe number of deaths caused by the earthquakes and fires in Chili. According to advices reoeived at New Fork, Valparaiso, which was the centre of the disturbed area, suffered severely. The eastern section of tbe city, which was composed of saoond-class residences, was hadly damaged. A number of prominent residents, it is stated, were killed. Perfect order now prevails in the city owing to the presence of troops and military. Ambulances are collecting tbe injured. Intense darkness waa experienced after the first shook and many peoplelhought tbe end o'f the world had come. Several who were suffering from weak hearts died of trlghc The scenes in the hospitals and gaols at Santiago were particularly distressing. The prisoners were einging a hymn when the shock occurred. The, walls of the prison fell, burying one hundred£and forty. Received August 21, 8.27 a m. BERLIN, August 20. The seismograph at Hamburg showed a greater and more prolonge disturbance than during the San Franuieoo eartbquke.

SHOCKS FELT AT MARTINIQUE
i Received August 21, 10.59 p.m. - LONDON, August 21. A great part of Vinadelmar has been burnt. It is reported that the town of Arica, in Peru, has been destroyed. A correspondent, who rode from Santiago to Valparaiso, estimated ' that 200,000 Chilians are homeless. The ruin is universal. It is impossible yet to estimate the number of fatalities. An economic crisis la imminent. Some of the railways been have reopened in sections. Subscription lists for suffeiers have been opened in London. Shocks were felt at Martinique on Sunday, and also yesterday.
