During the season 1905-06, 126,530 lbs of butter were made at the Makuri Co-operative Dairy Factory. At the meeting of the Y.M.O.A. At Ohristoburoh, yesterday, Mr Bishop, S.M.i, fined several bookmaker from £5 to £lO for trespassing on the Kiooarton Racecourse during the Grand National meeting. A great sensation has been caused in Madrid society by the arrest of Senor Salustiano Frias, who moved in the best circles in Madrid, and kept an elegant mansion in the Avenue Castellana. He is accused of having embezzled a sum of upwards of £IOO,OOO from the' Argentine Government, by which he was employed. The annual sale of work in aid of the Mhlnnesian Mission will be held in S. Matthew's Sohoolroom, on Wednesday and Thursday, Angust 29th and 30th. Mr Sydney Earee will sing on Wednesday afternoon, and an entertainment will be given by the "Li»dy Coons" on Thursday evening. Mr C. Braggins, ' one of the Borough employees, while engaged in cleaning nut the Mill Stream recently, discovered a human skull buried in the mud. The skull, though sound in parts, shows signs of decay, and is thought to bo that of a Maori. It will probably be presented to the Masterton Museum. There was a fair attendance of members at the ordinary meeting of the St. Patrick's Club last evening. Mr B. J. Dolan onoupied the chair. A debate took place on the question, "Would the introduction of the decimal system be an improvement to the present system of Messrs F. Ilaaghey and B. J. Dolan led in the affirmative and negative, respectively. After an interesting disoussion a vote was taken, and resulted in favour of the affirmative by two votes. The Distriot Health Officer (Dr. Makgill) reported to the meeting of the Masterton Borough Counoil, last evening' on the outbreak of scarlet fever at Ah Lop's shop in Queen Street, and on the destruction of stock, amounting to £l4 14s. in connection therewith. Dr. Makgill stated that it was a case in which the Borough might reaaonably offer compensation for the amount of stock destroyed. On ' the motion of Cr Ewington it was decided to pay compensation amounting to £l4 14s. A deputation from the Sydney Chamber of Oommoroe represented to the Premier (Mr Carruthers) the dangers underlying the AntiTrust Bill. The Premier said the Bill practically proposed to raise a wall of prohibition round Australia. His experience in regard to some aspects of Federation was that New South Wales did not get muob consideration. His instincts rebelled against a measure of suoh a character beoause of the powers given by Parliament to officers.
