CHRISTCHUROH, August 16. The Canterbury Jockey Club's Grand National Meeting whs tinued, at Riccarton, to di*y. The morning broke dull, but as the afternoon wore on the weather clearer], and the sun shone out brightly. The course, hnwever, was very damp, and the going was heavy. The racing was interesting, and speculation brisk, the total money put through the machine amounting to £17,573. In addition to this £1,421 bad been invested on the double, Pbaetoaitis aud Cuiragno returning a dividend of £3l 19s. There were some spills during the afternoon, but in no case was the rider sariouaJy injured. Results:— Hunt Club Cup, about '2y 2 miles. —HikaiiOH, 11.9, 1; Early Van, 11.8, 2; Recruit, 11.2, X. Also started—Carlo, Rowlock, Wi Waka, Nogi, Haeiekimoa, Deerslayer, Elmwood, Sir James, Uncle Ike, Albury and Stormy Petrel. Hikairoa and Early Van rose at the last fenoe almost on terms, the formor winning by a length; Reoruit a length and ahaif away third. Time, smin 34aec. Dividends, £4 10s 6d aud £3 ss. He jumped the last hurdle clear of Hydrant, and easily stalling off the letter's ohallenge, won by two lengths. Prospeotor was a length and a-half away third, followed by Comfort and Kremlin. The favourite was eased up in the straight, and finished some distance back. Time, 4min 4seo. Dividends, £5 Is 6d and £1 13s. Beaufort Steeplechase, about 2)4 miles.—Kiatere, 12.3, 1; Phaetonitis, 11.10, 2; Playfair, 9.13, 3. Also started—Eurus, Swimmer, Narcissus, Victory and Manazonn. Narcissus and Manazona made the running early, but at the stand double the latter came to grief. Narcissus led along the back and into the straight, but there dropped baok, and Kiatere took charge in the run home. Kiatere beat Phaetonitis by a couple of lengths; Playfair a length and a-half further baok. Time, smin 17seo. Dividends, £3 13s 6d and£l.
