A MODERN ESTABLISHMENT. The manufacture of high-class furnituro now-adays requires not only skill and experience od the part of those engaged in the work, but the use of the latest and best machinery is a most essential feature, as it enables faetory-owuers to turn out good work at a minimum of cost. A furniture-making business that has pone ahead through sheer foroe of the merits of its goods, is that of Mr K Collio, of 41, Riddiford Street, Wellliuu'ton. About Ave years ago Mr Collie Etartcd busiuoss in a modest way iu the Empire City, and /lis efforts have been attended with so much success that at the present time he Ins a wide connection nof only in the Wellington district, but in Bawke's Bay aud Manawatu as well. The ra&prietoi's watch-word in business lias been "progress," and that he has kept this iu mind is evidenced by the fact that over 35 hands are constantly employed in the factory alone. The shop itself is a decidedly spacious one, and is replete with a large aud varied stock of the latest, which is displayed to the best advantage. The shop has recently been considerably enlarged, and even now with its additional room the place is taxed to its utmost holding capacity. At the back of the shop is the factory, which consist of a three-storey building fitted up on the most modern lines. Most of the ground floor is devoted to machinery, which is the very latest and has only been installed at groat cost. The second storey is almost entirely used for ohairmaking, which is now an important branch of the business, while the polishing and upholstering is carried out in the top portion of the factory. A special k ilant has alsu been installed for the purpose of fumigating oak furniture, whio.h process has the effect of greatly improving the appearance of the timber. The proprietor makes a point of catering for the better olasa of furniture-making, which Le guarantees to make satisfactorily and at reasonable cost. Measrs R. E. Howell and Co., Ltd., are the sole Wairarapa agents for the furniture, and a large assorted stock is now on view at their mart in Perry Street.
