CHINESE IN WELLINGTON.
ALARMING RUMOUR. By Telegraph—Press Association. WELLINGTON, August 3. The Evening Post, to-night, states that a rumour calculated to alarm the Wellington people has been flitting through the city during the past day or two. It is alleged that the Chinaman, who has practically monopolised the retail fruit trade of Wellington, has hiq almond eye on other things It is stated that the Chinese contemplate competing with the Europeans as general merchants on a large soale by forming f. strong company. A gentleman familiar with all the stirs in commercial oircles here ventures an opinion that the report about the new yellow invasion may have a simple explanation. An auctioneering firm baa decided to relinquish its fruit and produce department, and a company is to be formed to take it over. The share list will be open to the public, and it is believed that the market gardeners and fruit growers will be the chief shareholders. The market gardeners in the ■ vioinity of Wellington are mostly ' Chinese, but the fruit growers are Europeans.
