MADAM MELBA.
HER EARLY YEAKS. Nellie Melba was bcrn in Melbourne, Australia, where ber father, Mr David Mitchell, a Scotchman by 4birLb, has long resided. Her mother, herself with a highly artistic temperament, soon discovered the •daughter's musical abilities, and gave Itr hei flist lessons. When but six years of age liltl* JNellio sang "Conain' Thro' the Rye" at a charity concert, and accompanied herself on the piano; but, in spite of that great success, her mother would not let her sing again for fear of strainiue her voioe. She learned the organ, piano, and violin, and showed equally great taste for painting. She waß barely sixteen when she lost her mother, and shortly after «he married an Jiugliab gentleman, Mr Charles Armstrong, son of Sir Andrew Armstrong, baronet, A son was born of this union, and soon after this the young wife leturmd to her father's house, and sung iu several concerts —Prom "Marcbesi and Music" (Harper and Brothers), by Matilde Marcbesi, the famous sing ing-teacher, under whom Melba studied for soto years.
