Oharles Lane and John Hinton, two fashionably-dressed young men Hinton having recently arrived from England and Lane from Melbourne—were arrested at Timaru, on Saturday, on a aeries of charges of obtaining money by the trick known as "ringing the changes." The accused were brought before the Timaru Court, yesterday morning, when it was shown that they obtained money from several business places iu Timaru in this way. They '' were sentenced to three months' imprisonment. The Auckland Star states that on the first of the preseat month the time for the payment of tho polltax by theSamoans expired. The Eltharo Co operative Dairy Factory manufactured over 715 tons' of butter last year from 38,000,005 lbs of milk, an increase of 82 tons on the output of the previous season. The milk required for one pound of butter was thus 23.721b. Suppliers were paid no less than £60,824 for butter fat.

The Department of Industries and Commerce has beeu informed by the High Commissioner that the dairy produce carried by the s.s. Gothic, which recently took Are near Plymouth, was not in any way damaged, with the exception jf about 40 cases of cheese, which were slightly affected by water. The dairy produce by the s.s. Bimutaka also reached Home undamaged.

The railway revenue for the portion of the financial year to Jane 23rd,' was £602,228, as compared with £554,112 for the corresponding period last year. An interesting experiment with. carcases of New Zealand and English mutton was conducted recently by of the Ipswich Union. The master reported that the New Zealand carcase weighed 721b unoooked and 501b when cooked. The English oarnase weighed 771b uncooked and 511b cooked. This showed that, in the matter of waste, there was 41b in favour of the New Zealand mutton on the carcase. The report was referred to the Workhouse Committee and the St. John's Home Committee for consideration. During the inquiry into the financial position of Zion City the cashier of "Doctor" Dowie's bank gave evidence in the court that Dowie's account was overdrawn to the amount of £96,247. His personal expenses averaged £16,800. a year. There were overdrafts of £131,540 from various Zion City industries since 1899.

As wo stated in a previous issue, says the Farmers' Advocate, the Agricultural Department, as a result of representations by the Union, made a trial in the Wairarapa, Marlborough and Nelson districts of collecting agricultural statistios through the post, but the result was not satisfactory. The Department has informed the Head Office that a further trial is to be made. A fatal motoroar accident ooourred at Ewburst, near Hastings, England, a large touring oar belonging to Messrs Skinner, of Hastings, containing seven ladies, one gentleman, and the driver, being overturned through something having gone wrong with the steering gear. Miss Ransford, the matron of Buchanan Hospital, Hastings, was killed, and five others were seriously injured. Mr Leslie Harris, the society entertainer, concluded his Masterton season in the Town Hall, last evening, before a fairly large audienoe. His olever mimicries, songs and stories, and mirth - provoking sketches, were greafclv appreciated by the audienoe. Mr Harris is generplly looked upon as one of the moat accomplished entertainers that has visited Masterton. Miss Rosina Buokmann sang a number of wollseleoted songs, and was warmly applauded.

A public meeting was held in Wellington, laßt night, for tbe pnrpose of discussing the proposed ereotion of a crematorium in the oity. Dr Mason said there ooald be no doabt from a health point of view as to tbe advisablenesa of substituting cremation for 'earth burial. A long discussion, generally favourble to tie proposal, took place, and a pommittee was appointed to further the project.—Association. One of the most important land sales transacted in this district for some time past has .been effected by Mr W. H. Oriuokshank, land agent, Perry Street, Masterton (in conjunction with Messrs J. D. Cruicksbank and 00., of Masterton, and Messrs Payne and Co., of Christcharoh). The property sold is tbe well-known "Orui" estate, owned by Mr EdwiD Meredith, and at present leased By Mr W. H. Toogood. The purchaser is Mr W. Cunningham, of Rangiora, a well-know;i treeder of stock. Tbe estate consists of 7,654 acres of freehold and 509 acres leasehold, and 10,000 sheep and 600 head of cattle go with the property. Mr Cunningham, who is well pleased with this distriot, should prove a valued addition to the ranks of local breeders of stud stock.

Private advices received at Wangauui from England announce the death of the Hod. G. M. Waterbouse, a former Premier of New Zealand, at Torquay, aged 82 years. The deceased was also Premier of Australia, aud was said to be the only etatesmau who had held the Premiership of the two colonies. Jf the list of Now Zealand's Premier's is* referred to it will be found that George Marsden Waterhouse was at the head of affairs from October llfcb. 1872, to Marob 3rd, 1873. He came to tha colony in 1869. Tbe deceased occupied a seat in the Legislative Council up to the date of his resignation on Jane 20th, 1890. In South Australia the Hon. Mr Waterhouse was one of the leading political figures in the early days.CHe was one of the members of the 1 first elective Assembly iu that State.
