The following report of the Wai-rstaoa-Wangauui match, played -tin Saturday, is taken from the Wanganui (Jtarouicle:—Spadkman kicked off for'the visitors, who immediately rushed into Wanganui territory, where Logan passed out to P. who passed wildly, and Mitchell intercepting, found the line at hnlf-way. J. O'Leary kicked out at Wanganul 25, where Logan marked cleverly, and Spaokman made a good attempt at goal. Meuii kicked back to the 25, where Spaokman bad another futile shot from penalty. The visitors, getting the ball from the .scrums, endeavoured to use their backs. Logan and P. O'Leary-mado a good opening for Darville, who failed to take the ball. Bell marked in front, enaliing Fowler to kick a floe goal. Wanganul 3—o. The visiting forwards were badly beating the Wanganui men in the scrum, not only hooking the ball, but pushing right through tbem. Bell dribbled along the touohline to within a few yards of the line, where O'Donnell and Farkes joined in, the latter scoring a try. Fowler failed to convert. Wanganui 6—o. After scrums and line play, Spaokman rushed the ball through the loose, and pioking up, made a strong run into Wanganui i quarters, where 'he passed to t O'Leary, to Prendeville, who was ! stopped ut the Wanganui 25. Tho Wairarapa forwards then came with an irresistible rash to the Wanganui line, and Boss forced himself over. , J. O'Leary failed to convert. Wanganui 6—3. After give-and-take play, Hehderson, Spaokman and McKenzle dribbled through irresistibly to tho Wanganui line, where the visitors' backs made some fine passing runs, Logan, the O'Leary fcrotbers, and Darville being stopped by Mitchell ana McCarthy on the Mne. J. O'Leary returned the kick off • in the second spell to the centre, and the visitors at once became aggressive. A good kick by O'Leary brought Wanganui into more trouble. Henderson forced his way to the line, but Takbrangi came away with the ball, and dropping it, dribbled sniertly to the centre. The Wairarapa forwards were now playing a strong game, and aided by the wind, maintained their attack upon the Wanganui line. A great rush by Wines, Fulton, Ross,' and Gray, went to the line, where Maodonald relieved under pressure. McCarthy at lust obtained possession and initiated a pretty passing rap, Mitchell, Bell and . Craig reaching the half-way line. O'Donnejll, Jones and Corby improved the position to the visitors' 25, but Darville undid all their work with a high kick in the wind to the local 25. Henderson and Spaokman dribbled over the line, but Craig forced. A passing rush, en a bed Craig to score in the corner. Fowler failed to convert. Wanganui 3—3. The Wairarapa baoks started a passing run, which was spoiled by J. O'Leary miafielding, and Craig, cutting in, passed to Mitchell, who reached the visitors' 25. McCarthy passed to Mitchell, to Bell, to Mitchell, but J. O'Leary intervened. Mitchell recovered possession, and after a nice -run transferred to Takarangi, who dodged over. Mitchell failed to convert Wanganui 12—3. Logan kicked down the field to Meuli, who fumbled badly, and Logan charging down, scored near the posts after a soramble in front. J. OLeary failed to convert. Wanganui 12—6. Wairarapa returned to the attaok. Logan made a] strong run through, but failed to pass. After another floe run by P. O'JLeary, Darville was thrown out of touch. Just on time the visitors' forwards made a supreme effort, and carrying all before theru, reaohed the Wanganui line. After a prolonged struggle on the line, Logan dashed through and passed -to Darville, who ra'i over and scored at the corner. Spaokman "-failed to convert, and the bell rang with Wanganui victorious by 12 to 9. The opposing forward teams were, ■on the whole, fairly evenly matched, the advantage being With the visitors in the first spell, and with the local men in the second. The main test of strength, however, was between the respective back divisions, and in this department the Wanganui men established a clear superiority, as thoy not only showed greater individual speed and cleverness, but were in every way mote versatile than their opponents. It is quite possible that the best form of the visitors rearguard was not revealed, as on the ohly two or three times upon which thoy really got going tneir centre failed to take the ball, and in oonsequonoe, thouwings got few opportunities. Logan ■was easily their best back, and in conjunction with P. O'Leary, ho brought off some olever bits of play. Both men, however, exhibited a tendency to retain the ball too long and they practically iaolated their threequnrters, who, when making their own chances, gave evidence of considerable ability.
