MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
MASTEKTON—FHIDAY. At the Mascerton S.M. Court, yesterday, before Messrs Hi. G. Eton and E. McEwen, Js.P., W. F. Shaw was charged with having published and E. H. Waddington with having ' printed a oertain paper without having the name of the printer, and the place of abode thereon, contrary to "The Printers and Newspapers Registration Act, 1868." Mr 0. A. Pownall appeared for Waddington, and Mr R. K. Jackson foc.Shaw. Both defendants pleaded not guilty. In the case against Waddington the evidence of the police tended to show that the paper in question was exhibited in Shaw's window, and did not have the imprint on it. Defendant had candidly admitted printing the paper, but he had understood from Shaw that the paper was for private use. Of the six copies printed only one had been published in Shaw's window. Defendant, Waddington, and his printer, Andrew Niool, gave evidence to the effect that they thought the paper was for private use, otherwise the imprint would have been attached. The Benoh recognised that there was no attempt on the part of Waddington to evade the Act, and dismissed the information, with 9s costs. In the other case Shaw said he told Waddington that the paper was for inside use, but he did not say it would be exposed in the window. If he had known the imprint was required he would not have published the paper. The Bench severely admonished the defendant ou the nature of the paper, and fined him £5 and costs.
