THE VICTORIAN LOAN
MELBOURNE, July 28. Mr Bent, the Viotorian Premier, states that it is proposed to float a conversion loan of £4,000,000 next year, and that the prospects are excellent. The bulk of the money, says the Premier, can be raised looally at per oent. A sinking fund is to be provided.
ANNUAL CONFERENCE OF FARMERS. PROGRESSIVE LAND TAX. RESOLUTION NEGATIVED. Received July 28, 7.42 p.m. SYDNEY, July 28. At the annual Conference of the farmers, to-day, a resolution in favour of a progressive land tax was negatived by 89 votes to 19 votes.
THE STEAMER MALAITA
SYDNEY, July 28. The Malaita's engines broke down a*, sea, and when the injury was repaired' the coal ran short, and 20 tons of maizerwere used as fuel. (The steamer Malaita, whioh left Norfolk Island on July 17tb, only arrived at Sydney, on Friday. She was beset by a furious huirioane, lasting the whole voyage).
