CHASING THE MAORI OUTLAW.
The chase after the Maori outlaw Matenga in the wilds of Poverty Bay is evidently accompanied by considerable hardships. Writing to a member of the Post staff, an ex-Wel-ingtonian at one time well-known in the athletio world ot this city gives the following interesting particulars of the expedition:—"l am writing from away back in the bash, where we are ohasing a Maori outlaw who has been out for over four years. It is raining in torrents so we are bavins a spell today. There are ten of ■as in the party—three constables and the rest utation-hands. 1 am guide •and director generally of the party. One party got lost on Monday and spent the night on a ridge without shelter of any sort. It rained half the night, and snowed the rest of the time. In the morning J took a party oat and found them. They wera all fair done. One man had thrown away his boots and was insensible. His feet were completely skinned and frost-bitten. We carried Jhim back to camp over gullies and up hills through dense bush. It was a terrible job. The doctor sent for has not yet turned up, so a patty of bashmen ate carrying 'the man out to-morrow. We have found several of the outlaw's •camps, and in one were two rifleß ae bad stolen. It is a funny feeling to come on a camp in the middle of the bush and walk up to it expecting every nrinute to get a shot fired at you. lie has threatened to shoot anybody who tries to oatoh him. We have lived on pork ■and biscuits for 17 days now, and it is getting a bit stale." It may be added that Detective Broberg, of Wellington, who was successful after a very long chase in arresting Ellis, the murderer of Oollinson at Martinborougb, has been despatched to Poverty Bay to assist in the chase. ,
