The death occurred, early yester* day of Master Clifford; Remington, youngest son of Mr and Mrs H. Remington, of Masterton. The deceased, who was nearly 14 years of age, fell down last Friday and injured his head. Death was caused by an abscess on the brain. The funeral will leave the residence of Mr and Mrs Remington, in Bannister Street, to-morrow, at 2 o'clock..

During the week ended July 20tb, the birds taking pare in the Utility Poultry Club's second Egg-laying Competition at Lincoln College have laid 541 eggs, making a total to date of 6,065 eggs for twelve weeks. The recent floods have wrought groat havoc at the Grahamstown railway extension, scarcely a cutting esaaping damage, while the long passage through the Pah Hill, which hod taken years to form, is now choked with huge landslips from both sides. At the Masterton Magistrate's Court, yesterday morning, S. Azale was charged, on the information of W. Culleo, Sanitary Inspeotor, with a breach of the borough bylaws by allowing matter of an offensive nature to accumulate and remain on hia premises. The Magistrate rvled that the charge was defeotive on the ground that it did not specify the property and the information was dismissed.

A serious accident occurred in Manners Street, Wellington, about 3 o'clock, yesterday afternoon. Mrs Spring, whosie husband is a French polisher, employed in the city, was crossing the street, when sne noticed that a tramcar going towards Willis Sfcieet was almost upon her. She made am effort to get off the line, but was caught by the apron and thrown on to the other line almost under the wheels of ano ther car which was coming from Thomdon. This oar was brought up almost instantly, but too late to avoid inflicting serious injuries to Mrs Spring. Her left leg was fractured and her head and body cut. She was removed to the Hospital.— Association.

At the Christqburcb Supreme Court, yesterday, Henry Deaoon JRaynor, Secretary of the Druids' Lodge, who had pleaded guilty in the lower Court to a oharge of embezzling lodge money, was sentenced to five years' imprisonment. W. H. P. a former inmate of the Barnham School, was sent to gaol for two years on a oharge for breaking and entering. Ilfred Whittam, for breaking and entering, was sentenced to two years' imprisonment. Henry Cunningham, charged with rape, was sentenced to teu years' imprisonment with bard labour. But for being of weak the accused would have been flogged. Florence Manlove, alias Udale, waiTsont to gaol for three months for bigamy.

The Marino Department has been authorised by Cabinet to arrange for a fresh water aquarium at the New Zealand Exhibition. A special building is to be ereotedfor the purpose. There are to be sixteen glass tanks, and a large pool in the middle of the floor will be set apart for the reception of the largest b: own trout whiob can be obtained in the colony. The fish which it is intended to plaoe in the aquarium ; will include quiunat, sockeye, and Atlantic salmou; rainbow, landlooked, Loch Leven, Scotch born, American brook, zebra hybrid, and native trout; goldfish, grayling and eels. The aquarium is to be'plaoed in oharge of Mr F. L, Ayson, Chief Inspeotor of Fisheries.

The schooner Waiapu arrived at Auckland from Qisborne via East Coast on Sunday morning, after a trip of a month, due to exceedingly rough weather on the coast. For three weeks she wasv anchored in Hioks Bay. While a fleroe westedy was in prorgess on Monday week the wind suddenly shifted to the southeast, and within an hour was blowing strongly [from that quarter. Hioks Bay then offering no shelter, the schooner ran round to Little Awanui, where she anchored until Thursday, it being inadvisable to faoe the weather in |view of the shifting nature of the shingle ballast. On Thursday the weather moderatad, and Oreti Point was left on that morning, light r easterly winds with veryjheavy seaa being met with until arrival.

Mr E. Kempthorne, Manager of the fjaak of New South Wales at Amberley, met with a rather serious accident on Priday evening. He left home at 5.30 p.m. to ride to the beach. By 8 p.m. he had not returned, and a large eearoh party was organised. The party searched the Beach {Road and swamp, and at 10 p.m. Mr Kempthorne's horse, whip, and cap were found on the side of the road. A further search with lanterns was made throughout the night, which was very cold and dark, andjat daylight Mr Kempthorne was found wandering tbout the beaoh in a dazed condition; He was immediately taken to Amberley, and attended to by a doctor, wJio found him to be suffering from slight concussion of the brain, the effoots of exposure, and bruises. He is now progressing favourably. Dr. R. H. Makgill, Wellington district health officer and Bacteriologist to the Health Department, accompanied by Mr C. A. Sohauer, Chief Sanitary Inspector, Wellington, has been, during the past two days visiting the various hotels condemned by the Wairau Licensing Committee, reports the Marlborough Express. It is understood that the inspections have been most thorough, Mr Schuuer having paid particular attention to /the 11 houses condemned by the committee. It appears that the visit is the outoome of the evident discrepancy between the committee's resolutions and tho local inspector's report. A meeting of the Masterton Cemetery Trustees vill be held on Friday, at 3.30 p.m. Miss Isabella McKinnon, daughter of Mr and Mrs J. MoKinnon, of Newman, is lying seriously ill in the Masterton Hospital. Mr W. Robertson, youngest brother of Mrs J. Heyho-5, of Masterton, died at Nelson on Sunday. The deceased was 36 years of age. The roads are in a bad condition and the rivers are high in the Wairoa district. Waikaromoana has be.eq isolated for nearly a fortnight. A native residing at one of the pahs on the Waikaromoana Koad is reported to be suffering from leprosy, stated a Wairoa telegram last evening. An lnveroargill telegram states that George Smith, a labourer, aged 55, living alone at Lime Hills, committed suicide, yesterday, by cutting his throat. It 's reported that 50 temporary clerks employed at the Government Huildiugs have been given notice, that they will not be renuirbd after the end of the present month. A South Wairarapa Poultry Society was formed at Carterton, ou Friday. It was resolved to apply to the New Zealand Association forshow dates in the first week in July of next year. During the four weeks ended Sat-, urday last about 6,000 sheep were trucked bt the Masterton railway station. During the same period 220,000 fe u t of timber were consigned from the station. At the inquest held at' Cbristohurob, yesterday afternoon, touching the sudden death of Mr J. Bidmeade, a member of the Conciliation Board, a verdict was returned that death was due to heart failure. —Association. ' A dance in aid of the Building Futid of the Te Ore Ore Catholic Church will be held in the meetinghouse, at 8 o'clock to-morrow evening. The committee have arranged that a drag will leave the Masterton Post Office at 7.30 p.m. Miss Marion Ewing, aged 26, daughter of Mr Jrgeph Ewing, a sawmiller, at Pembroke, fell into the fire in a faint, yesterday, and was severely burned. Mhe has succumbed to her injuries.—Association. Keen interest is being taken in the forthcoming election of officers in connection with the'Masterton A. and P. Association. A large number of voting papers, have already been forwarded to ' the Secretary. The annual meeting of the Association will be held on Thursday. Walter E. Maxwell, who was extradited from Western Australia, appearei at the Auckland' Police Court, yesterday, on severa' obarges connected with bis bankruptcy. The Crown Prosecutor obtained a week's remand, stating that many charges were ponding against Maxwell. . The criminal sittings of the Su prerfio Court will be opened in Wellington, on Monday next. The list to present date comprises nine obarges against ten persons, tbe names of accused and the offences charged being as follows:—Percy Burt, alias Albert Hanson, theft; William Parker, theft; Albert Dnwnes, unnatural offence; William Willia, theft; John Black, Angus Blaok, Daniel Morris, assault and robbery; Alfred Amory George, false and defamatory libel (private proseoution); George Gaudin, theft of £4 16s and theft of £B3; Ernest Carl Max Mielsoh, atonmted murder.

The Greymouth Star learns from a reliable source that the proposal to give the Seddon family the Ministerial residence and grounds in Moleswortb Street, Wellington, has been abandoned. News comes from Karamea that the body of Captain Stenerson, master of the soow Rangi, who lost his life in the accident that uccurred last week while survey soundings were being taken on the bar, was found two miles north of the Karamea River, yesterday.

Owing to trie unfavourable weather, last evening, the Mastortou Municipal Band had to postpone their programme of music, which they intended to render at the junoticn of Pine and George Streets. The showing of the magic lantern viiws had also to be postponed. The band will play next Monday evening instead, and on this occasion the views will also be shown.

A number of the members of the V.M.C.A. Literary and Debating Society visited Carterton, last evening, to hoar Sir Robert Stout leoture on John Knox. The address, which was given under the auspicea of the Carterton Literary and Debating Society, proved very interesting. Mr Anderson occupied the chair. At the conclusion of the address a vote of thanks was acuorded to the lecturer.
