A sensation has been created, at Christehurcb, by the arrest of F. H. Bruges and his clerk, James Goodman, on six charges of theft of mouey, totalling £1,300, the property of Henry Tuok, of Obriatcharoh. The oases arise out of the recent bankruptcy of Bruges, who is a well known solicitor, whose books are said to be in a chaotic condition. The accused have been remanded for a week. Bail Was allowed.
The grants made by the Maßterfcon Trust Lands Trustees last evening amounted to £332. The oomplete list is as follows:—Masterton School, £95; St. Patrick's Sahool, £27; Fern ridge School, £25; Technical School, £100; Te Ore Ore School, £lo;.Masterton Gymnasium, £10; Fire Police, £5; Fire Briagde, £10; Public Library £SO. The question of a grant to the Masterton Band was held over.
Five telegraph poles collapsed in Victoria Street, Wellington, last night, near the Marcer Street intersection, causing considerable alarm in f.he neighbourhood. The poles were subject to a heavy strain being ouaibßred with five telephone cables, each weiahing about six tone, besides a large number of single wires. Men were working all night clearing the Teokage, and restoring communication. —• Association.
At Wellington, yesterday, before Dr. MoArtnur, S.M., the case John G. W. Dalrymple v. Pnblio Trustee (as executor and trustee of tne will of John Tucker) and Mary Tuoker was heard. ;Tbis was a case in which plaintiff sued for £l3l ss, as commission on the sale of the Prince of Wales Hotel at Masterton. The defence was that plaintiff was not authorised to effeot the sale, and that he did not actually introduce the purchaser. Judgment was reserved.
James Oassidy, who was arrested at Wellington recently,, on a charge of having insufficient lawful means of support, and on being searched was found with about £6O in his possession, appeared on remand before Dr. A. McArthur, S'.M., at Wellington, yesterday. His Worship heard the case recently, and reserved his decision. In the bourse of his judgment, yesterday, lis Worship said the defence amounted to nothing more than that the defendant had dene i small amount of work at scene-shifting, and a still less amount of boxing, coupled with a vague assertion of a bookmaker's clerk that he had won some bets from a bookmaker. His Worship could not; consider this, and did not, aa giving a good account of bis means of support, and it by no means satisfied him. In bis Worship's opinion, therefore, the information must be upheld, and the de fandaut oonvioted. A sentence of three months' imprisonment was imposed. On the application of Mr Herdman seecurity was fixed in view of an appeal. I ■ Stubborn Cough Cubed. Strikes increase in nnmber every year in Germany, says a report to the .of-Com* meroe, aad in 1905 they numbered 2,057, as compared .with 1870 in the previous year. There were also 120 look-outs tn 1904, and 200 in 1905. g
The Wellington Trades Council, on Thursday evening, decided unanimously, to "protest against the appointment of Mr W. J. Culver, late Seoretary of the Libera! and Labour Federation, as Inspector of Factories. The grounds of the objection were that the appointment was a political reward for services rendered to the Federation, and that Mr Culver's health would not permit him to satisfactorily perform the duties of inspector.
Mr J. J. Hill, the American railway magnate, in an address togtbe Ottawa Canadian Club, reoently, ; a wonderful industrial expansion in the Canadian North-West, and said that there would be a population of fifteen millions in that portion of the country. Mr Hill was loudly applauded when he advised Canadians to stick to the British flag. It had a splendid record, he declared. No matter how great the development of Canada might be, that was no reason why there should be any desire to desert the Union Jack. "Keep your old flag flying," was his advioe.
At Terata, 40 miles from Gisborne, a huge landslip completely smothered a station-house belonging to P. A. Tiffen, at 10 o'olook, on Monday night. Tiffen, a married courle named Merritt, and a shep herd were imprisoned in the wreckage several hoars until the flooded torrent swept through and washed them out amongst the gravel. Tiffen and Mra Merritt got their legs badly torn, and! the other two were severely knooked about. They crawled for hours to a woolshed, and when they reached it they had all their olothes torn off. They were found, atlO a.m., on Tuesday, wrapped in woolsacks and all suffering intensely. Tiffen and Mrs Merritt are reported, 3d be in. a rather bad way.
A meeting of delegates from the vanoua Dairy Companies of larauaki, held at Stratford, on Wednesday, under the auspioes of the National Dairy Association, ap proved | of the appointment of a representative on the English market. Most of the delegates agreed to pay 2s 6fl per ton of output towards his salary and expanses. Otheis did not wish to opmmit their Companies at that stage. Over £BOO was thus guaranteed in the room, and if the scheme is taken up in other parts of the colony, it will be possible to considerably reduce the contrioution per ton. The appointment was left in the hands of the Executive of the Dairy Association. At a meeting.subse' queutly held, a Taranaki Dairymen's Club was formed for the discussion of matters affecting the industr3. Captain Charters, of the Masterton Rifle Volunteers, waited on the Trust Lands Trustees, last evening, in connection with matters relating to the Drill Hall. He sta'ed that the Volunteers rented the Hall at what was considered an equitable rental. Their income was limited, and if Volunteers were able to let the Hall their income would be materially . increased. At present they could not let the Hall owing to the floor being unsuitable for dancing. They asked the Trustees' assistance in putting down a new floor in the Hall, shifting the stage, thus increasing the floor space, and putting a small lean-to at the back, which would serve as a supper room. The Volunteers could not do the work single-handed, but if the Trustees would do the work the Volunteers would be prepared to pay an increased annual rental. After disoussing the matter, the Trustees declined to acoede to the request of the Volunteers.
According to the KegistrarGenerai's monthly retarn, the number of births during May in the four ohief cities, with their suburban boroughs,' was as follows: —Auckland, 132; Wellington, 160; Ghristohurob, 135; Dunedin, 126. The deaths during the month, witb'the proportion per thousand of population, were—Auokland, 61, 1.06; Wellington, 61, 0.97; Ohristohurcb, 38, 0.72; Dunedin, 47, 0.8'4. The total births were 553 and the deaths 207—-the former being 37 and the latter 39 above the number in the previous month. Fifty-nine of the deaths, or 28.50 per cent., were of children under five years of age, and of these 49 were under th« age of one. Seventeen deaths were due to cancer, 14 to phthisis, and 3 to other forma of tubercular disease. In other classes of disease the mortality was normal. Thirteen death 3 resulted from anoidenfc or negligence, and two from suicide—two of tha acoiflnnt cases being from collisions with tramcare, one iu Wellington aud one in Dunedin.
The fortnightly meeting of the Court Loyal Enterprise, A.0.P., was hold la<*t evening, in the Foresters' Hall, Bro. J. Kitchener, 0.R., presiding. The Secretary of Court Bruce, Milton, wrote (hanking the Lodge for the attention paid to one of their members whilst in the Masterton Hospital. Bros. Hudson, Godfrey, Broom and Roberts, wrote forwarding subscriptions. The Secretary of Court Kopuaranga wrote forwarding medical fees for one of the members of that Court who is now residing in Masterton. The 0.R., 5..0. R., P.0.K., were appointed a Committee to make arrangements for receiving the members of Court Marquis of Normanby, Carterton, who are ooming to a oard tournament, to be held in the Foresters' Hall, Masterton, on August Ist. It was deoided to place Broc Fear's name as O.K. on the Respect Board, and to present him with a neck ribbon and certificate. iJro. Brassell was elected to the position of J.W.
