POPULATION OF THE PRO- ' VINCES. WELLINGTON, July 20. A return issued by the Rei?inu'arGeneral gives the population of each provincial district in the colony with the numerical and centesimal increase since March, 1901. Wellington stands first for the rate of progress with an i crease of 27.12 per cent, in five years, and one mouth, Auckland comes next W!tb 20.42 per cent., and Hawke's Bay third with 18.39 per cent. The details are as follows: Auckland, population, 1901, 175,938; rnpulatiun, 1906, 211,856; increase, numerical 35,918; increiso,' centesimal 20.42. Taranaki, 1901, 37,855; 1906, 43,404; increase, 5,549 and 14.66. Hawkes Bay, 1901, 35;424; 1906, 41,938; inorease 6,514 aod 1.839. Wellington, 1901,141,354; 1906, 179,693; increase 38,339 and 27,, 12, Marlborough, 1901, 13,326; 1906, 14,356; inorease 1,030 and 7.73. Nelson, 1901, 37,916; 1906, 4,1768; increase, 3,853 and 10.16. Weatland, 1901, 14,506; 1306, 15*427; increase, 921 and 6.35. Canterbury, 1901, 143,041; 1906, 159,051; increase, 16,010 and 11.19. Otago, 1901, 173,145; 1906, 18C,944; increase, 7,799 and 4.50. Out of a total of 23,650 half castes in April, 1906, the provinuial district of Auoblaud had 1,555; Wellington, 220: and Otago, 238. Out of a total of 2,493 Chinese, Otago bad 808; Wellington, 657; Westland, 309; Auckland, 251; Nelson, 197; and Canterbury, 117.
