The Federal Senate debated Mr Stanford Smith's motion to allow a limited number of press messages over the Paoifio cable free of oharge. Speakers generally condemned the existing press services. Mr Keating stated that the matter had been under consideration previously, and tbe Paoifio Board had refused to countenance the scheme. Some of the objections to it were, he said, insurmountable. After some debate, most of the speakers commenting favourably on the proposal, but recognising the difficulties, the motion was withdrawn. TRaMWAY EMPLOYEES' GRIEVANCES. Reoeived July 21,12.53 a.m. SYDNEY, July 20. Amongst the statements made by tbe disaffected tramway men was that the Westiughouse-Newell magnetic brake was unreliable. The Railway Commissioners appointed a board of experts, inoluding the leading tramway officials in other States and Professor Pollock, of the Sydney University Board, to make enquiries. After examining a large number of witnesses and testing the brake, the Board unanimously report entirely in favour of the brake, and declare it to be prompt and effioient in action and powerful for emergency stops. - '1 .. n.
