HOCKEY.
(By Centre r Hql£.) '' HUGHES SHIELD COMPETITION, HIGH SCHOOL v. GREYTOWN.
I Taams representing the Masterton I District Hiab School and Gre.vtown met on the Seboolground, yesterday afternoon. Tho ground was on the heavy side, but notwithstanding this a good, fast gains was witnessed. The play throughout was very even. In the first Bpell play was of a particularly exciting nature. Greytown attacked iu fiiu» style. Misses Humphries, Dunn and E. Bruntou came fast down tho line, and a score seemed probable, but Miss Terry, the Schoolgoaliieeper, cka/el with a aplunrfia hit. The School rallied, and Misses Kioharrls, Jackson (2) and MoKenzie were responsible for Greyif-wn being put on the defeu sive. Misses Humphries, iiickneil and Keedwell cleared the line. Play ofagiveaud take nature followed. Then Miss Richards broke away ngvin with the bill, nud being ably aupported by Misses Elliott, Keienbsrg and MoKeuzie, carried play to the Greytown goal. The visitors wero hard pressed for a time, but eventually relieved, and took play down the field. Good, play on' the part vt Misses Biokoell «nd Humphries was responsible for the High School being placed on the defensire. A determined attack was staved off by the excellent play of Miss Terry, who sent the ball well up the field. The School had slightly the best of the play for the rest of the spell. The second spell was keenly foughtout, each side striving bard for victory. Miss Humphries and Dunn, for Greytown, kept np a vigorous attack on the Sohool goal, and narrowly missed sooring on several occasions. Misses Terry, A. Jackson, Richards and Keiaenbsrg, put in some tine defensive work. Gradually the sohool worked the ball towards tho Greytown goal, and some exciting play ensued. A shot at goal by one cf the Sohool players *6nly missed the post by a few inohes. Greytown cleared their line, and play centred. Misses Riobards, Elliott, A. Jackson and Easthope carried play into Greytown territory! again, but Misses Dunn and Humphries relieved. Greytown had a brief t-rn at attaoking, but Miss Terrj'sfine play saved a score. Time was called shortly afterwards without any score being registered. For Greytown Mißses Humphries and Dunn played splendidly, their fine dribbling rushes baing a feature of the play. Good form was also shown by Misses E. Brunton, E. ,Bioknell and C. Keedwell. The latter bad a hard task set her in watching* the Sohool right wing, Miss O. Riobards, who played a fine I dashing game. It would be hard to I individualise the other Sohool players bat Misses E. Keisenberg, A. Jackson and P. MoKenzie probably caught the eye most. Considerable interest was manifested in the game by the spectators, who numbered about 200, and each piece of good play 'as warmly oheered. Both teams showed excellent form and combination, and had the ground not been so heavy a particularly fast match would no do\ibt have resulted. Mr F. Riohards was referee, and gave satisfaction to both sides. The School team entertained the visitors at afternoon tea. HUIA v. GLENGARRY. A vety fast and interesting match was witnessed atLansdowne yesterday, when the Huia team met the Glengarrys. Though neither side soored two obanoes were missed by the Huias. The Glengarrys were attacking strongly in the first spell, but the back division of the Huias put m excellent work, and prevented a soore. Iu the second half the Huias strongly. The fine play on both sides aroused the enthusiasm of the spectators. Misses Hooper, Barker, Sutton, Gardner and Hampton played well for the Huias. and Misses MoHattie (2),-Mc-Gregor and Hood for the Glengarrys. Mr J. King was referee. GARRY OWEN ▼. RAUFO. The match between the Garry Owen and Raupo teams was played at Fraser's Paddock yesterday. The game was well oontested, and resulted in a draw, neither side scoring. Misses Judd, Barnetc, Heyhoe and Dean played well for Raupo, and Misses O'Leary (2) and Hourigan for Garry Owen. Mr Humphrey was referee. MAJOR CUP COMPETITION. W.F.C.A. v. KIA KAIJA B. The matoh Gel;ween tho W.F.C.A. and Kia Kaha B teams was played at Lausdowne, yesterday afternoon, and proved fast and interesting. W.F.C.A. got going right from the start, and from a passing rush inaugurated by Pragnell, Minett "shot" nicely, and secured first blood. Some more passing amongst the W.F.C.A. forwards ended in MoNeilage sooring the second goal. Ifp to this time the Kia Kahas bad beon penned iu their own 25. Hatch shifted play by hard-hitting iuto the "Reds" (W.F.C.A.) quarter, hut La Roche broke away, and passing to Pragnell, the latter dribbled the ball, passed several players, and scored the third and final goal. After this tho Reds were only prevented from scoring by good defensive play on the part of the Kia Kaha backs. The first spell ended without further incident. The second spell opened with an attaok by the Kia Kahas, but good defensive play by Fairbrother and Smith prevented them from getting into dangerous quarters. The "Whites" (Kia Kahas) were once more placed Jon the defensive by Richards getting in some very smart hitting. The play after this was of a give and take cbaraoter. ThelKia Kahas "narrowly escaped' sooring, while W.F.O.A. got within scoring several occasions.
The game thus ended in a win for W.F.O.a. by three goals to nil. For the W.F.C.A. Richards, Smith and Fairbrother played very well in the backs, while HalJ, aa goal keeper, did his work in flnt» style, and in the forwards Pragnell assisted by Minett, and La Eoobe, played splendidly. For the Kia Kahas Hatch, Tocby and Nicol ia the backs, and Huoper iu the lorwards were the pick. | Mr M. D. Mcintosh jefereed in an impartial manner.
KIA KAHA v. CARTERTON. The Kia Kaha A team still hold pride of place iu the Major Cup Competition, for thuy defeated Carterton yesterday by three goals to cue. Great interest was centred in the match, which was noted for the good hockey shown on both sidos. Williams, King and Rue hit a goal each for the winners, and Fred. Bunny soored Carterton's only goal. Mr S. Noble-Campbell was referee.
