A meeting of direotors of the Wairarapa Caledonian Sooiety will be held in the Club Hotel, Masterton, on Saturday, July 21st, at 2.30 p.m.

The police yesterday raided the premises known a& 1 the Shamrock Hotel, at Jnvercargill, and seized a keg of beer and a small quantity of whisky.

The Kev. A. Thompson, who has been appointed Minister of the Masterton Presbyterian Church, is expected to arrive, in Masterton during the first week in August. The Victorian Miuister for Agriculture (Mr Swiuburne) has referred a very moot point to the Oub< toms Department, this being if, in addition to the Commonwealth mark, the States can also affix a brand to butter. Sir W. Lyne is of opinion that if the State brand represents a superior teat to that applied by., the Commonwealth it can be used by th» State in addition to the Commonwealth mark. The points to be-' awarded under the Commonwealth regulations will be 50 per oent for flavour, 30 for texture, and 20 for condition.

Daring the hearing of a case at the Collingwood Court, Victoria, on June 28th, when one William Ward* was called, upon to show why h© should not contribute to the support of his son, at present in the care of the Department for Negleoted Children, Emil Creed, an officer of the 1 department, stated that the - police found the boy in an apparently unoared for state in charge of two Indians, who employed him to gather and sell ferns. The Indians had produced three formal receipts, witnessed and stamped, showing that the boy had been passed over to them by the father. The latter was ordered to pay 4s per week.

It seems anomalous that while the Victorian Government is providing State relief works for many hundreds ol unemployed, and meals for hungry school ohildren, the Premier should be boasting of the unexampled general prosperity, says a Melbourne paper. The State revenue was never before so high. "We have paid off more of our debts this year," said Mr Bent, "than we have done since we incurred them. The position is altogether first-class, and don't you forget it." He added that he had reoeived a telegram from the Premier of South Australia (Mr Price): —"Aooept heartiest congratulations on splendid result of year's finanoes, whioh are most gratifying."

The splendid revenue reoeived by the Stute of Victoria for the year ending June 30th, 1906, is .tbe highest reached in its history, making allowance for tbe share now retained by tne Commonwealth. In 1888-9, when the land boom was at its height, the Victorian revenue reached the figure of £8,731,256, and the revenue 'for the past year, £7,797,626—added to the sum now retained by the Commonwealth to oarry out its services, £1,196,439—• makes a total of £9,994,065, or £162,810 more than that of the boom year. The lowest revenue sinoe 1888-9 was in 1895-6, when it fell to £6,458,682, and it has since gradually risen, until reaching the magnificent result of the year just olosed.

The newspaper Soir, Paris, published a telegram from Rome recently, stating that the Pope bad had a fresh heart attack, and that his heart was beating in an irregular manner. Large numbers of Cornish miners are returning from South Africa. They are dissatisfied with the conditions which prevail in the Transvaal, and are attracted by tbe mining boom at home, where wages are higher than they have been for a great many years. < A Paris newspaper says that Queen Ena carried with her to Spain a dowrj of 750,000 pesetas, and not £1,600,000, as reported. The value of the jewels King Alfonso has given to her is £IO,OOO. It is understood that N his Majesty intends to make Queen Ena present of a magnificent pearl "necklace, a diamond brooch, valued at £40,000, a crown, a diadem, and a diamond necklace. With respect to the North Island Main Trunk railway, the Premier says that the number of workmen now engaged in the work, exclusive of tbe general staff, is 2,300. Preparations are now well forward for launching out more extensively when more settled weather approaches. Mr Hall-Jones sees no reason to depart from tbe opinion expressed some time ago, that trains will be running through to Auckland before Christmas, 1908. The chemistry division of tb« Department of Agriculture, Wellington, has reoeived samples! of sugar beet grown at 'the Government experimental farm 'at RuHkura, Waiuato, for analysis. They are very good roots of the right size for sugar beet, not too watery, and fairly rich in sugar. The roots average about six pounds in weight. The analysis, tbe result of which is being watched with |interest by Waikato growers, is not yet completed. Speaking at a meeting, last week, of the Auckland branch of the International Arbitration and Peaoe Association, Mr J. E. Taylor urged that "some steps should be taken with a view to approaching the Defence Department to take into consideration the question of withdrawing the prinoiple of military training in our public schools." The Rev. M. Walker seconded. The secretary pointed out that the provision for military training in the public schools was embodied in the Education Act. The motion was carried. The Wairoa Guardian says:—At the pa over the river there has been some excitement recently. The oropbetess Hiki Pobi is alleged to have effeoted several marvellous oures. In ojm case a woman of 75, who had been totally blind for two years, is stated to have had her eyesight restored.. Anoher woman was relieved who had been deaf and dumb. Several other miracles are attributed to tbe prietess. The other day an imposing ceremony was performed. A girl of 17 was the principal bride.. Nine wahines were dressed as brides, their ages ranging from 20 years to 70 years. A considerble amount of brandy is being consumed. Hundreds ut natives from tne surrounding country have been visiting the prophetess, and as a consequence there is considerable orowding in the whares, which are in a foetid oondiion. The oredulonta natives are entertaining their visitors well, but certainly some authority should step in to prevent the abnormal [consumption of brandy, especially among the women.

M'Artbur, S.M., charged with having on Jane 23rd, 1906, at Wellington, attempted to murder his wife, Maria Rosina Eleanor Mielsnh. Chief-Detec-tive M'Gratb applied for a remand until next Monday on the ground that Mrs Mielsoh, at present in the hospital suffering from the effects of a blow on the head witn an axe, was not yet able to appear in court. The application was granted. The accused appeared \ little concerned about bis position.

Tbe fortnightly meeting of tne Masterton Oddfellows Lodge was held last evening, Bro. P. Smith, H.G., occupying the chair.
