Masterton ... ... 15 Carterton 3 A few mi,lutes afterwards the final whistle sounded with the soores upaltered. Masterton's victory was a brilliant one, due mainly to the fine play of tbe backs. Carterton had slightly the best of the play in the first spell, but Masterton practically ran over their opponents in the second spell. The visitors were stronger in the forwards than the local team on the line-out, and in "tight" work. The Masterton pack showed , their superiority in the loose. Masterton outclassed Carterton in tbe back division. J. O'Leary played a brilliant game. Nothing to equal his performance baa been seen this season. On two occasions certain scores were saved by him. Tbe Carterton forwards would break right through the Masterton team, and. carry the ball along at their toes with only the fullback to pass when O'Leary would spring from somewhere, snap np the ball and find the touch well down the field. Hie magnificent play was repeatedly cheered. Logan played a trioky and plucky game all through, and collared in fine style. The try he j scored was the outcome of aolever piece of play. P. O'Leary played,a good game, and was at times brilliant. His passing and collaring was all that could be desired. Several dangerous rushes were cleverly stopped by him. Millar made no mistakes,| and ran and kicked well. Gray and Greenfield outclassed their opponents on the wing. Spackman shone np well in the louse. MoKellar w<is notioeable for the hard work hj« did. Perhaps no forward on the ground • worked harder. Certainly there Is no more consistent forward in the Masterton team. The other forwards did their full share of work. E. McKenzie played a fine game among the backs for Carterton, and repeatedly saved his aide. Groube was the pick of the others. S. Mason, Johnstone (2) and Cadwallader were the best of thi forwards. Mr A. B. Charters was an impsrtial referee, and gave his decisions with firmness. Messrs K. Armstrong and T. Fielding were tbe touch line umpires. RED STAR v. GKEYTOWN. Rogers scored a try and kicked a penalty goal for the winners. Wrigley potted a goal for the Stars from half-way. Mr E. Beard was referee. Bad play on the part of some of the Star forwards on the line-out I was, to some extent, responsible for Greytown's victory. InsSead of each Star forward marking a man they bunched together, leaving opponents A unmarked. On several occasions this season this fault has been noticeable, and the sooner the Star forwards remedy' it the better. Wrigley and Darville played fine games among the Star backs, anc| were ably assisted by the others. Williams, at full-back, kicked well. Pulton played the best forward game on the ground. Welch, Warner, C. McKenzie and Dixon were perhaps tbo best of the other forwards. P. Rogers played a magnificent game for tbo wihners. Maguire, 0. Rogers, and Udy also did good work.
