The death ocourred, on Wednesday, at tiie Masterton Hospital,, of Mr Charles Basstian. who was recently practising his profession as chiropodist in this town. The cause of death was heart diseas". At one period Mr Basstian held an interest in a sheep station in the South Island.

Mr W. P. James, S.M., occupied the bench at. the Masterton Magistrate's Court on Saturday morning. Two first offenders were fined 5s each in default 24 hours' imprisonrneut for having been drank. Daniell Hannan and Adam MeKeown. alias Henry James MoKeon, were charged with being idle and disorderly persons. The former having no previous convictions against him, was oonvioted and ordered to oome up for sentence when called upon. The latter, against whom there were a number of previous convictions, was sentenced to three months' imprisonment.

Mr Bept stated that the gold yield of Bendigo and district; to Maroh last was 15,000,0000z, and tbe dividends for the past 21 years totalled £4,190,000. Tbe total yield for the State wa3 £68,000,000 up to* March, 1905.

Considerably more than half the platform of the new railway station at Dundia is in position, and the remainder will be put in hand when traffic arrangements permit. The platforms, when completed, will have a total length of 50 chains, will cover an area of square feet, and will accommodate as many as six trains at one time. On the other hand, if she does marry before thirty years of, age she receives the whole £44 down as a wedding present.

Mention was made at a meeting in Ohristohurch, recently, of the great amount of planting in Canterbury. Sir John Hall said that the distriot was indebted to the late Hon. William KollesLon more than to any other man for the planting of reserves. It was due largely to his foresight that the Canterbury Plains had gained their exceedingly valuable shelter, and that a large amount of timber of aertain kinds would soon be available in Canterbury.

As a matter of fact he was an inmate of the Renall Sol way Home, but he left beoause, as he alleged, "he did uot get enough to eat." Two young oyclista named Liddle and Beckett, who intend cycling round the world without money, have arrived in Melbourne from South Africa. They left Capetown on Deoember Htb last, and since then have cycled through Cape Colony, the Orange River country, and Natal, through native territory to Port Elizabeth—a distance of 4,000 miles.
