NEW RAILWAY FOR THE WAIRARAPA.
MATTER BEFORE THE BOROUGH COUNCIL. At the meeting of the Masterton Borough Council, last evening, a letter was received from the Hatt Borough Council in connection with the proposed new railway from Wellington to Wairarapa, via Wai-nui-o-mata. The letter stated that the Hutt Council had decided to approach the Minister of Kaiiways to urge upon him the advisableness of constructing the line. The advantages of such a line were pointed out, and the Masterton Borough Counoil was invited to appoint a delegate to join the deputation to wait on the Minister. Cr Ewington thought the matter should have the fullest sympathy of the Counoil, as the advantages of suoh a line to this part of the North Island weie many. Cr Maaon, of the Hutt Borough Counoil, was to De congratulated on having brought forward suoh a scheme. He moyed that the Mayor be appointed to represent the Counoil on the deputation. Cr Feiat seconded the motion. ® Or Elliott did not think that the Council should encourage the scheme, as residents in thia district had always been fighting for a shorter line to Wellington than the present one, and the proposed new lino would make the journey to Wellington some hours longer than at present. Cr Hoar supported Cr Elliott. Cr Ewington'e motion was finally carried, Or Feist pointing out that the motion was only to appoint a delegate to join the deputation to the Minister.
