OPENING OF PARLIAMENT.
LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL.
By Telegraph—Press Association. WELLINGTON, June 27. The Legislative Council met at 2.30 o'alobk, when Parliament was opened by Commission in the way usual in the case of new Parliaments.
HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. The House of ReDresentativea met at 2.30 p.m.. and proceeded, on the invitation of the Commissioners, to the Legislative Council, to hear the Commission read the opening of Parliament, and after its return the members were sworn in by the Clerk of the House. ELECTION OF SPEAKER. The House then proceeded with the election of the Speaker. Mr Lawry said that he was thankful that it had fallen to bis lot to move the election of Mr Guinness, who had won golden opinions from all sides and bad distinguished himself by his affability to all, and especially by the care and attention he invariably paid to the younger members.
Mr Buddo- seconded the motion, and detailed the many servioes performed by Mr Guinness. He hoped that the House would come to a unanimous decision. This the House did at ouce.
Mr Guinness, in returning thanks for bis eleetion to the high office of declared his readiness to he always vigilant and just; to act ever without fear, favour, or friendship; to maintain always the traditions of the House, and bold the balanoe even between parties. He reminded the House that without the support of Its members the Speaker is neoessarily powerless, and concluded by submitting himself to the judgment of the House.
Taking the chair, Mr Speaker again thanked the House for bis election, and repeated the pledges he bed given on the floor of the House.
The Hon. William Hall-Jones congratulated Mr Speaker heartily, and sketched briefly his career, and assured him of the continued confidence of the House.
The Leader of the Opposition (Mr Massey) followed in the same strain, adding that Mr Speaker, under all possible circumstances, could depend on the support of members of both sides of the House in his endeavours to uphold the dignity of Parliament.
Mr Speaker briefly thaDked the last speakers. The House adjourned at 3.20 o'olook.
