Hans Max Mielsob, who attempted suioide whilst under arrest on Monday for a charge of attempting to murder bis wife, was not so well yesterdpy. His wife, however, is reported to be a little better. Claude Clarence Neville, alias John Martin, who was arrested at Collingwood on a charge of bigamy, has been remanded to the to appear there oa Monday. It is alleged that Neville has a wife and ohildren at Waihi, and that he married a young woman in Nelson about a year ago, the woman dying at Collingwood on Sunday. A Christoburcb telegram, last evening, stated that at tbe Magistrate's Court, yesterday, Harriet Foster, of Shaad's Track, near Lincoln, and her mother, Anne Foater, were committed for trial on a oharge of having murdered the infant child of the former. Tbe child had died recently, no, doctor being in attendance, aad a verdict was returned that death was generally due to starvation.

At the Blenheim Police Court, yesterday, William Murphy, charged on two informations with having obtained goods from storekeepers at the Seddon Township by false pretences, was sentenced to six months' imprisonment with hard labour. Accused was convicted three years ago at Wellington on a charge of horse-stealing. The train from Wellington to Masterton last evening oollided with a cow betweeen Mungaroa and Kai« toke. The animal was killed instantly. The train was delayed for some time until the mangled remains of the an'.mal were extricated from teneatb the engine. Tbe train reached Mnstertou about Ave minutes behind time. Tbe weekly meeting of the Y.M.C.A. Literary Society was held last evening, Mr C. McEwen occupying tbe chair. Mr W. E. Chamberlain read an interesting paper on "Emigration," dealing with the various causes and effects of emigration and immigration. An animated discussion followed. Next Wednesday evening the Kuripuni Mutual Improvement Society will pay a visit to the Y.M.C.A. Society. Mr A. J. Parton will oocupy the chair. • ! A Wellington telegram states that in the Appeal Court, yesterday afternoon, the appeal by Mr Braund against the decision of Justices Edwards and Cooper in connection witb the destruction of the Colonial Bank's books 'was begun, Mr Braund requiring them to be kept for a further period as an "action was pending against some of the late directors of the bank. The decision of the Judges was that the Court had no jurisdiction to make an order for further preserviation of the books, and it was from this that Mr Braund appealed. Mr Braund is conducting his own case, and had not concluded argument when the Court adjourned until to day. The ordinary meeting of the Masterton Fire Police was presided over , last evening by /Captain Dixon. Constable N." Fielding wrote askinst for his olearanoe and transfer to the Petone Fire Brigade. Granted. A complimentary ticket for the Patea Fire brigade's annual social and dance was received. The Secretary was instructed to send a letter of condolence and sympathy to Mr R. F. Haybitile in oonneotion with the death of the late Mr Q. % H, Haybittle. Lieutenant Wilton presented Captain Dixon, who had completed five years' service, with a long service medal. The Chairman presented Lieutenant Wilton with a 1 two years' bar, completing sl3 years* service. It was] decided to play a euchre match against the railway Staff on July 11th.
A recent copy of The Illustrated Western Weekly News (Devonshire), banded to as by a Masterton resident contains a portrait of Mr John Henry Square, of Barnfleld, Kingsbridge South Devon, who enjoys the dis' tinotion of being the oldest praotis--ing solicitor in England. Born on February 20tb 1817, he was ad : mitted a solioitor in the Easter term, 1839, and has been in practice for more than 67 years. Although in his 90th year, Mr Square, as can be seen from the photograph, looks very much younger, and oonsiderin bis kdvanced age, enjoys good health. He is a member of a wellknown family whiob has been associated with the legal profession in the South of Devon for many generations, is- the head of the flrifc of John'H. Square and Son 1 , Kingsbridge, and visits the office almost daily. It was only about two years that Mr Square resigned the Registrarship of the Kingsbridge County Court, an offloe to which his so* Mr ,J. Harris Square, ban been appointed, and for some time after his 80th birthday he was clerk to the Kingsbridge Board of Guardians and Rural Sanitary Authority. Are Yon a Nuisance ? Searoh is still being - made at Htingitikei, near the Waitomo Caves, King Country, for a valuable mere, buried there by one of the most important chiefs who went out to fight against the pakeha. He did not wish anybody else to have the mere, so buried it. He was killed in the war, and though the looality of the buried treasure is well-known, and searoh has been i made for it all round and about, it has never yet been found. Strange to say, a bell, used formerly to call the Maoris to service, was also lost during the war, and it was dug np out of the mud during one of the searches for the buried mere. A settler naed it one day to men In to dinner and the Maoris all flocked to the bouse, recognising the tone of their old call-bell. It was restored to them, and now is used for its original purpose.
