A report was presented to the Masterton Borough Counoil, last evening, by the committee appointed to confer with the Borough Engineer on the question of the termination of his agreement with the Counoil by mutual consent. The report stated that tho Engineer was prepared to carry on the work of the borough at the present salary of £3OO per annum if he were allowed the right of private practiue, or in the alternative at a salary of £350 per year if he gave uptheright of private practice, on condition that he be aPowed to complete the urivate work in which he was already engaged. The Committee made no recommendation. The matter was discussed in committee. Finally Cr Feist moved—"That the Counoil agree to retain Mr Dobson's services at the present salary of £3OO per year until he has carried out the private works that he is already engaged in in the distriot, on the understanding that he takes no other outside work. 5 ' Cr Ewiugton seconded the motion, which was ea-ried on the casting vote of the Mayor, the voting being as follows:—Ayes: Crs Elliott, Eton, Ewington, Feist, and the Mayor. Noes: Crs Pauling, Temple, Hoar, Morris, and McEwen.
