MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

ORDINARY MEETING. The ordinary meeting of the Masterton Borough Council was held last evening. The Mayor presided, and there were also present—-Ors J. H. Pauling, J. Elliot, P. W. Temple, T. G. Hoar., W. Morris E. G. Eton, J 0. Ewington, E. Feist and E. McEwen. Mr 0. L. Beale wrote stating that in connection with bis giving a< atrip of ground for the widening of Villa Street, be required the Council to connect his property with the drainage, to remove his fence and complete the footpath, the two former works to be carried out to his satisfaction. : The matter was referred to the Works Committee. An application was made by the Secretary of the Masterton Municipal Pire Brigade for the ereotion of a gas lamp opposite the new Jubilee shed in the yard of the Central Station, as in the darkness an might easily occur. The application was granted. Tbe Secretary of the Raupo Hookey • Club wrote declining to accept tbe Council's offer to allow the Club the use of the Park Oval at a rental of £1 per year. The W.P.O.A. Hockey Club also wrote stating that tbe football practice ground was unsuitable for hookey. . They would be prepared to take tbe Oval when available at a .rental of £1 for the season. The| letters were referred to the Park Committee. The County Clerk wrote stating that theJMasterton County Council did not propose to give any further consideration to tbe question of widening tbe northern approach until definite proposals for the financing of the scheme were laid before the Council. The majority of the Councillors agreed that the work should he carried out, and on the motion of Or Temple, seconded by Or Ewington, a committee consisting of Crs Pauling, Temple, Eton and Ewington was appointed to submit a scheme and report on the approximate cost of the work, and the liability of the looal bodies concerned. Mr A. Webber wrote asking the Council to spreiad a few loads of gravel on the footpath in front of his property in Villa Street. The Engineer was instructed to attend to the matter; A letter from Messrs Pinhey Bros, referring to fnatters in connection with the extension of Wrigley Street was held over until the Innn schedule was again being considdrddt ' ■ ' Mr W. G. Beard, on behalf of Mr J. Maoara, wrote with regard to the Council taking a piece of land in front of his client's house for the purpose of widening Dixon Street. Mr Maoara was willing to submit the question of compensation to arbitration unless the Counoil was prepared to offer a sum which he was agreeable to accept. On the motion of tbe Mayor the matter was held over until such times as the valuation cf the land in question was obtained. Dr. Makgill, District Health Officer, wrote correcting the impression of the Council that the Department was prepared to appoint as their agent in Masterton any health inspector, who would ba appointed . by the Council. Unless the Department had a share in the choosing o the inspector, and unless he was a man with a satisfactory knowledge of his work, the Department could not consider the question of contributing towards his salary. A schedule of a sanitary inspector's duties for tbe $ Borough was submitted by a committee appointed for the purpose, and it was decided to forward tbe schedule to tbe Health Department, and to enquire whether if the Counoil appointed a competent man,the Department would be prepared to subsidise such an inspector's salary and to what extent. Aocing under instructions from the Chairman of tbe Masterton Trust Lands Trustees Mr A. Hathaway, tbe Secretary, wrote protesting against the aotion of the Borough Council in entering upon part Town Acre 121, removing the fences and forming a stop bank thereon without, previously obtaining the per-, mission uf the Trustees to do so. The letter was received. The question of widening Smith Street was referred back to the Committee, alreauy appointed to consider tbe matter, to go further into the question. The Gas Manager was instructed ko report on the advisability of enlarging the gaa main at tbe northern ?nd of Queen Street. Cr Feist moved that tbe loan ichedule be re-opened and re-con-lidered. Or Eson seconded the notion, which was carried. Or Mor■is opposed the motion. It waa ;ben decided to reconsider the. juestion of what works should be mt in hand during the first year of he time over which the loan is pread at the meeting of the Works Committee on Tuesday evening. It was decided to vote £3 3s to be Salvation Army Band for their ißsistance atj the memorial servioes it Masterton on Thursday.
