SELECTED VERSES.

; ON HALLOW EVE. Sne pat tbe withered grasses by And raised the moasy stnne. Above ber, through the flying clouds, T*ie moon of midnight: shone, A hjoded shape of pallid midt She sought the olden w6ys, j&nd paused before the house wherain Were passed her wedded days. From lighted windows came the sound Of revelry and mirth, Where merrymakers gathered round A brightly blazing hearth. She saw her husband through the pane, And nestling at bis side, With roses in her golden hair, His new and lovely bride. She glided through the darkened hall And up the winding, stair. The nursery door was open wide, Tbe orib—it still was there. Upon a crampled pillow tossed Her baby's tangled ourls; The moon shone in upon his tears And changed ttoum into pearls. She pressed the little grieving w moatb With kisses thin and cold, ' She wrapped him in the obilly mist Which was her mantle's fold. "His father has a bride," she said, "To keep him company, But I am left to sleep alone; The child shall come with me." The dancers shook the oaken floor All night with rythmic tread. A tiny form of frozen clay Lay silent overhead; And o'er the dead October leaves A wreath of vapour stole. Enfolding in its shadowy arms The baby's sinless soul. —Mln'nh Irving.
