THE WIDENING OF SMITH STREET.
AGAIN BEFORE THE 130R0UGH COUNCIL. At meeting of the Masterton Borough Works Committee last evening the question of widening Smith Street again came up for discussion. Ihe Town Clerk reported that the Committee appointed to visit the street had done so, and bad decided to recommend the Council to widen the street to threequarters of a obain on the south side and not to widen on the northern side. Since this deoision had been arrived at the owners on the south side of the street bad proposed to the Town Clerk that the (street should be widened to one chain on the southern side. Mr R. J. Lyttle wrote to the Committee stating that if the street was to be widened on the south tide, his present premises would have to be removed, and he would require compensation. He would be prepared to allow the Counoil sufficient land to widen the stieet to one obain at the price of £3O per foot. As an alternative he would be pre- , pared to contribute towards the cost of widening the street on the northern side. Mr Lyttle waited on the Committee in support of the letter, and stated that rather than allow the matter of compensation to go to arbitration he would leave the matter entirely in the hands of , the Council. The Mayor pointed out that when Mr Lyttle bought the property the bylaws regarding the setting back of new buildings was in force. The matter would, however, be fully considered at the next meeting of the Counoil, when the Committee submitted tbeir report.
