The Paoiflc Cable Company haa opened an office in the city for the transaction of business directly with the public. A CHURCH SERVICE CLOSED. Keceived June 18, 9.23 a.m. MELBOURNE, June 18. Two hundred unemployed attended Soots Church yesterday. Owing to the continuous interruptions daring the sermon, the Rev Alexander Marshall abruptly closed the service. He declared that he would not allow the House of God to be transferred into a debating club.
THE DISAPPEARANCE OF THE REV. JAMES. SYDNEY, June 17. The officers of tne steamer Mbheno, whioh has arrived from Vancouver, identified photographs of the Rev. T. A. James, as Lee, who, with Mrs Lee, travelled as a firstclass passenger on the homeward voyage. The Rev. T a. James, it will be remembered, left Pertn on April Ist. After visiting friends in Viotoria he went to Sydney, and from there wrote to his wife on April 16th. | He mentioned that he had formed a friendship with a man named Hunter. Later, Mrs James reoeived ; a letter from Hunter, purporting to have been written at sea. The writer stated that while he and Mr James were sailing in Sydney Harbour Mr James fell overboard and was drowned. .Subsequent enquiries showed the letter was posted at Suva, with an instruoton to the Postmaster at Sydney asking him to forward it to Albany. The officers Maheno state that on the arrival of Mr an 1 Mrs "Lee" at Vancouver tbey immediately boarded the East-bound train. FATAL CASE OF PLAGUE. Received June 18, 9.30 a.m. SYDNEY, June 18. The case of plague at Waterloo has terminated fatally. CLOSER SETTLEMENT. Received June 18, 9.30 a.m. SYDNEY, June 18. The State is purchasing the uobbagumbolin Kstate at Wagga, consisting of 62,000 aores, for closer settlement. MILITARY APPOINTMENT. Received June 18, 9.30 a.m. MELBOURNE, Jane 13. It is practically certain that Colonel Hoad will succeed MajorGeneral Finn as Inspector-General of the Commonwealth military forces. (Colonel Hoad, who is 50 years of age, served in the South African war, and was the Commonwealth military attache with the Japanese army in Manchuria in 1904).
