A whole holiday will be observed in Masterton on Thursday next, the date fixed for the funeral of the late Premier. A strong syndicate is being formed to" open up a valuable ooal area olose to Wbangarei, North Auckland. All the business which was set down for hearing at the Masterton Magistrate's Court oq Thursday and Friday will be taken on Monday next. A oablegram from Sydney states that Mr George Gilbert, the veteran cricketer, is dead. He captained the first New South Wales team against Victoria, The deceased was a cousin of Mr W. G. Grace. On acoount of the fuoeral of the late Premier beiDg b.Bld on Thursday the Te Rang Pai Concert Com-" pany have postponed their oonoert in the Town Hall, Masterton, till Friday evening, 22nd instant. The members of the Carlton Cricket Club are requested to attend the funeral of the late Mr G. H. Welch, whioh will leave the residence of Mr F. P. Welch, Lansdowne, at 1.45 o'clock this afternoon. The majority of the shops in Masterton have been draped out of respect to the memory of the late Premier. The front part of the building and also the verandah of the W F.C.A. were yesterday artistically decorated with blaok and purple. The enquiry at Valparaiso into the fire whioh destroyed the vessel Pit cairn Island, wool-laden, bound from Wellington to London, showed that the outbreak was due to spontaneous combustion. The captain was exonerated from blame in the matter. It is surmised in London ,that the fires which have broken out in vessels recently have been caused by the chemical constituents of sheep dip.
Durinp the 7fch week of the New Zealand Utility Poultry Club's inlaying competition, at Lincoln College, 532 eggs were laid, making a total to date of 3,128. The best totals for the were:—M. Blanch's Silver Wyandottes 21, H. Panuell's Buff Leghorns 19, A. L. Webster's Silver Wyandottes 18. The best totals to date are:—H. Pannell's Buff Leghorns 99, H. Walton's White Orpingtons 93, D. M. Peek's Black Orpingtons 90. Association.
At the meeting of the Masterton uddfellows Lodge last evening, on the motion of Mr 0. Perry, the following reiolntion was unanimously carried:—"That this Lodge places on record its profound sense of sorrow at the death of the Prime Minister of New Zealand, and its appreciation of his life's work in the interests of the colony and the Empire; and also expresses its deepest sympathy with Mrs Seddon and family in their irreparable loss." The meeting then adjourned.
The Mayor of Masterton (Mr J. A. Renall) requests that Thursday next, tne day appointed for the funeral of the late Premier, be observed as a day of mourning by all classes of the community. The Mayor also requests that all who are able to do so will join in the procession and memorial services at a time and place to be appointed. All ohoirs, members of orchestral societies, instrumentalists are also requested to take part in the services, and are invited to meet the oonductor, Mr A. Niool, in the Town Hall, at 8 o'olook to-night for practice.

The Masterton Municipal Baud will attend the late Premier's funeral ia Wellington on Thursday. A meeting of the General Committee in connection with the oablio memorial service, to be held In Masterton on Thursday, will be held in the Borough Council Chambers at 5 o'clock this afternoon.
To-morrow evening the Kev. J. N. Buttle will deliver an address on the life of the late Mr Seddon in the Y.M.O.A. Rooms. It is probable that the Mayor of Masterton will preside.
A oablegram from Sydney this morning states that the New Zealand racehorses Starshoot, Chivalry, Savoury, Melodeon, ate amongst the entrants for the. Canterbury Park races on Saturday. They have also been entered for raoes at the Warwick Farm meeting.
A Sydney cablegram states that a veteran scullers' race has been arranged to take plaoe oa August 4th. Beach, Kemp, McLean, Green, Rush, Layoook. Clifford, and Pearoe, have aooepted for the event.
A telegram from Palmerston North states that the Winter Show will be closed from 2 p.m. till 7 p.m. on the afternoon of Thursday, out of respect to the Premier. Palmerston North is full of visitors for tha Show, which commences to-day, and lasts till Friday night.
A telegram from Wellington states that two electric tram cars collided on Thorndon Quay, last night, one being considerably damaged. Happily one car was empty, and there were but two passengers in the other, a Mrs Dick and her daughter. The former, an elderly woman, suffered a severe cut on the forehead and several bruises. Her injuries, however, are not considered serious.
In connection with the report of the medioil officer who informed the Soulcootes (Yorkshire) Board of Guardians that thirty-five oases of siokness occurred in the workhouse, and six deaths, through eating Argentine frozen meat, a committee of enquiry set up to investigate the matter found that the Argentine frozen meat when delivered to the workhouse was sound. It afterwards went bad owing to faulty appliancea and improper means of storage.
A New Zealander writing from Vancouver to a friend in Ohrist- ! chnrab, speaks very hopefully of | the prospects of a steamer service between New Zealand and Vancouver if large and up-to-date steamers are put on. When the/ ship Daloa'.rnie left Liverpool, three hundred tons of superphosphates were shipped with other cargo. This has taken a firm bold of the sides and bottom of the vessel, and hardened like cement. It now has to be removed by regular quarrying operations and tools. Side cuts and undercuts have to be made, and the staff detached in huge lumps. It is work which doesn't pay stevedores. No doubt they would like to blast it out, but the ship has to be considered. Mails for the Commonwealth of Australia, Oeylon, India, China, Japan, Straits Settlements, also South Africa, Continent of Europe and TTnited Kingdom, for - specially addressed correspondence, per Moeraki, will close at Masterton, on Saturday, the 23rd June, aft 6.15 a.m. Mails for Fiji, Canada, United States of America, United Kingdom, and Continent of Europe, aid Fanning Island (connecting with Vancouver steamer leaving Fiji, speoial address required), per Moura, will olose at Masteeton. on Monday, the 9th July, at 5.30 a.m. Messrs Turner and Turner insert a speoial notice with reference to their Lorna Doone Tip Top Tea. A lost Gladstone bag is advertised for, and a reward offered for returning same to the Prinoe of Wales Hotel or to Mr T. Pinkney. The Masterton Borough Council notify that it is proposed to bring into force, within the borough, on July 12th, "The Motor Registration Act of 1905."
Messrs Turner and Turner advertise that they have a supply of the most reoerit photo of the late Pre* mier. These are on exhibition in the windows of the Tip-top Tea Rooms.
The Wellington Education Board notify that all schools within their jurisdiction will be closed the funeral of the late Premier, and will re-open on Friday. The Wairarapa Coursing Club will hold a coursing meeting on July 4th, sth and 6th. The events to be contested at the meeting will 'be the o(Jen Sweepstake, Maiden Stake, and Supplementary Stake, for which liberal money and trophy prizes are being given. Nominations for the Open Sweepstake and Maiden Stake will close with the seoretary,. Mr J. Cairns, at 9.30 p.m. on June 30tb. Acceptances close at 7 p.m. on July 3rd.
