THE LATE MR SEDDON.

SQGUESTED MEMORIAL SEKVIOE."

MESSAGES OF SYMPATHY. By Telegraph—Press Association. LONDON, June 14. Sir Joseph Ward has suggested that a memorial servioe should be held in Westminster Abbey on the day of Mr Seddon's funeral. He will be unable to leave on Friday. The Colonial Institute and the Independent Labour members of the House of Commons paased resolutions of oondolence. Reoeived June 15, 9.3 p.m. LONDON, June 15. King Edward gave Sir J. G. Ward half an hour's audience at Buckingham Palace, and referred with admiration to Mr Seddon's striking personality, and the very great loss sustained by the Empire, through his death. Sir J. G. Ward sails by the Majestic on June 27th. , A FRENCH JOURNAL'S COMMENTS. Received June 15, 8.20 a.m. PARIS, June 14. The French journal Le Temps says the late Mr Seddon is worthy of a place among the chosen few of our epochs of history. TRIBUTE FROM LABOUR. Reoeived June 15, 10.30 a.m. SYDNEY, June 15. The Labour Council has passed a minute recording its sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr Soddon. The minute states that the laws, plaoed on the Statute book should form an imperishable monument to one of the greatest leaders Demooraoy has N ever known,; The Council of the Prohibition Party has deoided to send a message of oondolenoe with Mrs Seddon and family. THE FUNERAL. It is still impossible to say with any certainty where the funeral will take place, as any arrangements that are made must be oontingent on any desire that may have been expressed by the deceased statesman. So far, however, it has been decreed by the Admiralty that as the body is oonveyed ashore from the Oswestry Grange the warships Encounter and Pioneer which will esoort the Oswestry Grange into port, shall fire a salute of 20 guns. Thfl body will then probably be oonveyed to the Ministerial residence in Molesworth Street, and remain there till Monday, when it will be transferred to the Parliament Buildings and left there in state. The first proposal was .that the remains should be interred in their last resting place on Wednesday, but it has now been found | that that is Miss Seddon's birth- ' day, and on that aooount it appears highly probable that the obsequies will be postponed till Thursday. ■ The Oswestry Grange is to be berthed at the Glasgow Wharf. It is suggested that on the day of the late Premier's funeral, a public Church Servioe should be held in Masterton. The servioes will either taue the form of a combined service in a large building such as the Town Hall or eaoh denomination will hold separate servioes in their respective oburoheß. If the latter course is adopted, it is suggested that there should be a procession through the streets in which the Volunteers and the Band, the latter playing appropriate ruuaio,- should take part. At a given point in the route a break should be maae, and eaoh denomination attend the servioes in their own Church. No definite arrangements can yet be made as the date for the funeral is not fixed. Mr R. Brown, Town Clerk, yesterday, communicated with the Hon. Hall-Jones asking him to intimate the date on which the funeral will take place immediately on its being deoided upon.

ÜBEJRAL AND LABOUR FEDERATION. At a meeting of the Liberal and Labour Federation, held last evening, the President (Mr J. A. Renall) moved the following motion, whioh was seconded by the Vice President (Mr M. 0. O'Connell):- "That the Masterton Bianch of the Liberal and Labour Federation of New Zealand wishes to plaoe on record its deep and heartfelt sorrow at the death of the Right Hon. the Premier, Riobard John Seddon, in whom the Empire has lost a statesman, the colony its greatest man, and the workers of the colony the noblest champion they have ever had; and that the warmest sympathy of this Branoh be offered to Mrs Seddon and the bereaved family in the aad blow that has fallen upon ♦hem." The motion was carried in silenoe. It was decided to ask the officers, the President, the Vice President, and the Seoretary and, Treasurer, to represent the Branch at the funeral, and that a funeral wreath be procured and sent down in the name of the Masterfcoa Branoh. A letter was raad coveriQjflH tiou towards a to the late Mr steps bate yet been such a proposal, warmly thank form him that dealt with laterJH^^HH^^^H

THE MASTERTON VOLUNTEERS. The Masterton Volunteers, on meeting for parade last 'evening, adjourned the drill out of reapect to the memory of the late Preraier, who was Minister for Defence, The Volunteerß will hold a Church parade, wet or fine, to-morrow morning at S. Matthew's Church. The Masterton Band will also be in attendance. It is probable that the local Volunteers will tabe part in local services on the day nf the late Premier's funeral.
