MASTERTON COUNTY COUNCIL.

FINANCE COMMITTEE.

The monthly meeting of the finance held yesterJJ day morning. There were presenters Weloh (chairman), OookburnHooa, Harris, Topgood, Guild, Warren and Kebbell. The Treasurer reported as follows: —Bank—General Account, or, £295 3s; Local Bodies Loans Aucount, cr, £2,612 Is. Accounts—Or balance, £2,231 is 7d. Receipts for the month, £2,557 Os 6d. Accounts amounting to £1,327 lis 2d were passed far payment. On the motion of Gr Toogood, seoonded by Or Warren, tne Council consented to Turkington's Thirds being handed over to the Pabiatua County Council. An application was reoeived from the Maori Council for the use of the Council Chamber for meeting purposes. It was deoided that the re-quest-could not be granted. Messrs 0. and A. Weloh wrote applying for the leese of the gravel reserve at Opaki purchased from the late Mr W. B. Buick. The matter was left in the hands of the representatives of the riding with poorer to act. - ' ■•■v;^" The Clerk was instructed to asoerV tain the cost of a stone-crusher and report to the next meeting of the Committee. An application from H. Crisp, roadman, for a cooking iange to be erected in his aottage, was granted.

COUNCIL MEETING. The ordinary meeting of the Masterton County Oounoil was held yesterday afternoon. There were pre--Bent—Ors Cookbnrn-Hood (chairman), Welch, Harris, Toogood, Guild, Holmes Warren and Kobbell. A petition was received signed by 23 setclers of Upper Opaki asking for a right-of-way between Bruoe's Road and the Ruamahanga River. Mr Soorrar waited upon the meeting and urged upon the Council the necessity of oarrying out the work.

After some discussion it was decided to write to Mr C. B. Pharazyn and ask him if he would be prepared to allow a right-of-way being made through his property. Mr A.Larsen waited on the Council, and asked that the Counoil improve Dorset's Road. Nothing had been done to the end of the road to which he referred for fourteen years. Alt the money had been spent on tbe other end. He estimated the cost of the work at £2O. The matter was referred to the Engineer. , A letter was received from the Manaaer of the Maaterton Corporation Gasworks stating that the Borough Council would be prepared to ereot lamps for tli e County Counoil, charging only the nett cost of each lamp, if the County Counoil provided the posts the cost for each lamp would be about £5 less. The matter was left in the hands of Ors Welch, Harris and Morris. The Te Ore Ore Sohool Committee wrote drawing the Council's attention to the accumulation of large pools of water owing to the bad condition of tbe water-tables in

front of the school. '2he Engineer was instructed to attend to the matter. Mr P. Carr wrote draw'totf the Council's attention to tbe tact fthat nothing had been done to mitigate the nuisance caused by the lodgment of storm water in front of his residence at Te Ore Ore. The Engiwas instructed to attend to the matter. , Messrs Morrison Bros., of BlairIjgie, wrote asking for permission to. enoroaob on tbe road when fencing off the road between their property and Mr Oripp's, as "slips" along the boundary made it impossible, in some places, to keep a half-chain from the centre of the road. The application was granted, subject to the Engineer's approval. Mr E. Wadham wrote applying for permission to use a strip of land along tbe side of the road reserve at Waingawa for potato growing for one season onlv. He stated that the traffic would not be interfered with.—Tbe application was uranted. Mr R. Pitcaitbley wrote complaining that pigs were allowed to stray on the road in front of his property. Tbe Clerk was instructed to write to tbe owner of the pigs and warn him to keep them off che road, otherwise they would be destroyed. Mr P. H. Whysall, the toll-keeper at Tawataia, forwarded his resignation. The resignation was accepted, ana tbe matter of appointing a successor was left in the hands of the Engineer and tbe representatives for the riding. Mr James Miller wrote asking the Counoil to do something towards improving the condition of Steep Creek Road leading to his property at Upper Taueru. The Engiueer was instructed to attend to tbe matter.

Mr W 0. Buchanan wrote stating that be had interviewed tbe Minister of Publio Works with regard to obtaining an additional grant of £IOO for the Kaiwhata-Homewood Koad. He at at 3d that the Minister recommended that the Oounoil should make formal application for v the amount to be placed on tbe Estimates next session. The Clerk was icifruotecl to acknowledge the letter. Messrs Sparksman and Co. wrote agreeing to repaint the Tawataia toll board for £5 10s. , Tb<* Chief Engineer of Roads wrote forwarding a oopy of the Ocder-in-Coodc'l declaring tbe Rakanui Eoad to be a County Koad, also forwarding a copy of the proclamation in connection with the taking of land for the deviation of the, MastertonEaut Coast Road via Weraiti. The Treasury advised a remittance of the following loans:—Flat Bush Koad, £200; Wangaeha Road, ±300; Homewood-Kaiwbata Road, £100; Waipoua Bridge, £260 ; Wilton's Bridge, £450; Wangaeha Koad metalling, £1,000.! On the motion of Or Toogood it was decided to apply for the following grants to be placed ontheEsti mates:—Long Hill deviation,£lso (£ for£), Paratanui Bridge £350, Hemewood - Kaiwhata Road, additional £IOO, and that Mr Hornsby, M.H.R.be written to and asked to support the grants. ' It was also deoided to apply for a sufficient amount to be placed on tbe estimates to secure the completion of the Wairere-Glendonald .road.' On the motion of Or Holmes Warren, it was deoided to apply for the following grants to be placed on the Estimates:—Alfredton-Weber Road £SOO, Saunders' Road £l5O, Barton's Line £250, Mount Baker Road £SOO, Flat Bush Road £l5O. It was also deoided to apply for £I,OOO to be placed on the Estimates fox- the Wangaehu Road.
