THE NATIVE DISTURBANCE. THE MOME VALLEY FIGHT. Received June 13, 7.48 a.m. PIETERMARITZBURG, June 12. Colonel Barker and tbe police closed one end of the valley, but the bottom of the gorge was left open, owing to the premature alarm of Ihe natives, who, aided by a fog up tbe donga and succeeded in escaping. The .Northern Rifles charged the rebels on tne flank. Lieutenant Rundle shooting Mehlokazulu. Bambaata, thuugh wounded and his horse shot under him, joined yignanda. LATER PARTICULARS. It was daybreak before the Mome Valley was closed at both ends. The rebels became alarmed at their position, and broke back in two parties to tne mouth of the gorge. Captain Mocfarlune poured a heavy valley at olose range. The bulk of the rebels fled at the first volley, but some of the more daring opened Are. Suddenly Captain Maofarlane threw up bis bands, crying "My God." He had been shot through the heart. The trooper who held him in his arms was also wounded. Captain Maofarlane was a South Australian trooper with the first Australian Contingent in the Transvaal war. §He had won a commission and DS.O. He was recently engaged in farming at Prangiu. Received June 13, 9.48 a,m. PIETERMARITZBURG, June 13. Forty rebels were Bhot in the trees, from where they were throwing assegais. Their total loss was 400. Mehlokazulu's standing among the natives wassupenoi to Bambaata's. The former was a crack shot, and. fought in the recent war. DEATH OF BAMBAATA REPORTED. Received June ,13 , 11.5 p.m. PIETERMARITZBURG, June 13. It is reported at Eshowe that Bambaata has died from the wounds he received during the fight at Mome Mountain. Up to date five hundred and seventy-five rebels have been killed.
