MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

ORDINARY MEETING. The ordinary meeting of the Ma«terton Borough Council was held last evening. The Mayor presided, and there were also present:—Ors J. H. Pauling, J. Elliott, F. W. Temple, T/ G. Hoar, f«J. 0. Ewington, E. Feist, E. McEwen, E. G. Eton and W. Morris.

The Engineer reported that Messrs Lyttle and Sous had submitted plans for the erection of a new building at the corner of Queen and Smith Streets, but the building conld not be erected 33 feet from ! the centre of the street in accordance wiih the Borough bylaws, as Smith Street was not 66 feet wide. He recommended tha» Smith Street be widened. It was stated that provision had been made for the work on the loan schedule. A Oommittiee, consisting of the Mpyor and Ors Feist, Ewington and Elliott was appointed to go into the matter and report to the Council. The Engineer further reported that the work of clearing the Makora Stream would be greater than the Council expected, as he found that there was no less than five feet of silt on the bottom of the stream before the shingle was reached. He reoommended the Council to visit the! locality to-day and seo what could be done. The Council adopted the Engineer's suggestion. The Inspector (Mr D. A. Morton) reported having visited the Uhinamans garden iu Renal I Street. He had ordered the premises to he cleaned up, and the rubbish burnt. Otherwise he found the condition of affairs satisfactory. The Mayor, Cra Pauling, Ewingtou and Temple were anpointed a Committee to report to the meeting ofjtbe Works Committee on Tuesday evening on a suitable section for the corporation yards. It was decided to call alternative tenders in England for a six or eight-horse double cylinder compound traction engine, convertible into a road roller, with ssarrifler attachment, also a road grader and a stone crusher wish screen and elevators.
