Tbe Arthur's Pass tunnel for which tenders have been called will be about five miles twenty-five ohains in length. In connection with the widening of Cross Street and other streets in the Borough, the Masterton Borough Council, last evening, decided to apply to the Valuation Department for the servioeß of Mr J. Fraser to act on behalf of the Counoil in tbe matter. The temporarily appointed inspectors of nuisances made their first report to the Masterton Borough Council last evening. They submitted voluminous reports on a number of houses already visited. The Town Clerk was instructed to serve notices on certain householders requiring them to oarry out the improvements mentioned in the reports. The Mayor mentioned at the meeting of the Masterton Borough Council, last evening, that it was probable that the Carterton butchers would tike advantage of the proximity of the Masterton abattoir to Carterton and kill their beasts at the abattoir. He added that the Carterton butchers were becoming alarmed at the number of beasts that were being condemned at the abattoir.
Matters in connection with the Borough Engineer's position were dlsousßed at the meeting of the Mbbterton Borough Council last evening. The whole question was fully considered, and the discussion that ensued lasted nearly two hours. The Mayor asked that the discussion be not reported in the newspapers. Cr Hoar objected to this, as be considered the matter "an important one to the ratepayers." The Mayor, however, ruled that the matter should not be reported, and tho business whs then dealt with in Committee. Finally, after one motion and two amendments had been moved and seconded, it was decided that the present agreement with the Borough Engineer be terminated by mutual oonsent, and that fresh applications be called for the position.
It is provided by the Law Practitioners Act Amendment Act of 1898 that where a solicitor has practised for five years, or as a managing clerk solely, he may be admitted as a barrister of the Supreme Court without examination. The point came up iu Chambers at Wellington the other day, and also before Mr Justice Dennistun, on Tuesday, wnen application was made to admit as a barrister a solicitor who haa been for the specified term managing clerk of a special branch of legal business, says the Post. The question, that struck his Honor was whether management of one legal branch of a firm's business was sufficient to qualify for admissiou in. terms of the Act. Judgment was deferred.
The Executive of the New Zealand Athletic Union, the governing body of athletic sport in New Zealand, has compiled a programme for the Uhristoburch -Exhibition championship meeting which ,it is now submitting to the affiliated associations. The meeting is to be held on January 26th next, and there are 22 events un the proposed programme. The big event is the Grand Exhibition Handicap (under Shofflc-ld rules), of 135 yards, tha first prize being J625 4 Highland Fling CbamDionshp for girls, under 16 years of age, carries with it a gold medal presented by his Ecel/lenoy the Governor. The winner of the most points in wrestling (three styles) is to receive a gold medal presented by the late Prime Minister (Mr Seddon). The programme is most varied in its contents, containing contests in music, short and distance running, stonethrowing (Irish style), danoing, wrestling, relay races for sohoolboys, putting the ball (Scotch style) and hurdle racing. I The Masterton Fire Police have challenged the Railway Employeea to a euohre tournament, to be played in the Fire Police Station, next Wednesday evening. Messrs Staples and Co., of Wellington, have presented a handsome trophy to the Wairarapa Coursing Olub. it is to be allotted to the winner of the Open Sweepstake at the meeting of the olub next month. A bullock was killed at the Masterton abattoir, yesterday, and it was found to be suffering from tuberculosis. The growth, whicha i was next to the beast's heart, measured 8 inches by 15 inches. The beast was, of course, condemned. At the meeting of the Masterton Borough Counoil, last evening, tbe tender of Mr J. Gavanagb, of £230, was accepted for 57% chains of formation and metalling on Junction Road, and tbe tender of Messrs) Gadsby and Bartlett, of £136 7s, was accepted for 27 ohains of forma-, ton and gravelling in Vivian Street. The Ounard liner Campania during a recent voyage from Liverpool to New York had on board for American consignees gold to the value of over one and a quarter million sterlinor, and weighing about 12 tons. Ibis is believed to be the largest value in bullion which has. been entrusted for ocean transport to a single steamer. Tbe Mayor, recognising that tbe sitting of the Masterton Borough, Council last evening would be an unusually long one, ordered refreshments to be provided, and at !&• o'clock the Council adjourned for twenty minutes. The refreshments were much appreciated. The sitting of the Council was a record one,, tbe business not being finished till 1.30 o'olock this morning. The Manager of the Masterton Corporation Gasworks reported to the meeting of the Borough Council, last: evening, that the amount of gas manufactured during May, 1906, showed an increase of 139,500 cubic feet over that made in May, 1905? 281,900 cubic feet more gas was sold in May, 1906, than in May 1305. The receipts for tbe month of May amounted to £498 16s 2d. A telegram from Wanganui states, that at the inquest regarding the death of Albert Dunble, who was suffocated, during 'the fire which destroyed the Cafe de Paris, on June sth, a verdict was returned that deceased met his death by suffocation on June'sth. Leonard Astawin, who is charged with arson and murder in connection with, tbe fire, will be brought before the Court this moning. The ordinary meeting of the Master ton MrePolioe was held last evoniag. Captain Dixon occupied tbe chair, and there was a fair attenaanoe of members. A letter was received from the Palmerston South Fire Brigade forwarding a book of art union tickets. Aocounts amounting to £4 17s 3d were passed for payment. :, The Shaw-Savill steamer Athenio, due in Wellington, from London via {'Capetown and Hobart, about the 18tb instant, has another large baton of passengers for New Zealand ports, the majority being im->» migrants, in ,tbe third-class. The total number of passengers on board the vessel when she leffc tondon was 413, the principal bookings being :--For Auckland, 169; Wellington, 101; Ohristohuroh, 68; Dunedin, 20; Napier, 30.
A meeting of th Q Wairarapa Coursing Club was held last evening in the Prince of* Wales Hotel. Therewere present:—Messrs G. G. Cork (chairman), W. Piatt, O. Peroy, W. 0. Welch, J. O'Meara, A. Wilton, ,E. Mercer, A. Dawea and E. Welch. Apologies for absenoe were received from Messrs J. Cress and J. Weloh. Messrs W. Minett, R. Smith and F. Wiokens were elected members of the Club. The Secretary reported that there were 14 hares, all inv good, condition,', on' ■ the Showgrounds. It was also stated that about 60 hares would be required for the forthcoming meeting, which is to be held on July 4th, stb and 6th. Other business of a routine nature was dealt with. A meeting of the General Committee of the Band, Fire Brigade and Volunteer Bazaar, was held in the Drill Hall last evening, Mr T. Jenkins presiding. The Secretary read the reports from the various committees showing the progress mad© in connection with the Bazaar. The following were appointed a Working Committee:—-Messrs G. Hutchinson, W. Clayton, T. Jenkins, F. Haughey, A. O. Levien and H. Morton. It was decided that the Committee meet on Friday night to disousß matters. Other routine business was transacted. A meeting of the Executive Committee was also held in the Drill Hall last evening, Mr A. B. Charters presiding. The Entertainment Committee reoommeuded that the offer* of Mrs Connop, of New Plymouth, to supervise the dancing be accepted. At the Masterton Magistrate's Ooart, yesterday, before Mr W. P. James, S.M., three boys were fined 59 each for having created a disturbance in the Town Hall during an entertainment on June Ist.
At the meeting of the Management Committee of the Wairarapa Rugby Union, last evening, it was decided to postpone all football matches on Saturday on account of the death of the Premier.
At the meeting of the North Wairarapa Benevolent Trustees, yesterday, al' the Trustees spoke in eulogistio terms of the valuable assistance that Serjeant O'Malley had rendered the Society during the nine years he was stationed in Masterton. A motion expressing appreciation of his work was carried unanimously.

liegal argument was concluded at the Masterton Magistrate's Court yesterday morning, before Mr W. P. James, S.M., in a case in which the Wairarapa South County Council prosecuted Angus Fraser for a breach of the heavy trafflo by-law for having used a traction engine without obtaining a license from the Council The case was beard at Carterton on the sth instant. The defence was that the by-law was bad on the ground that it was ultra vires and nnreasonable, and that it did not insure to the owner of the engine a full year's use of the license. Mr James reserved , judgment. Mr 0. A. appeared for the County Council, and Mr P. L. Hollings for the j defendant. ' An advertiser wants a bed-sitting room. Mr H. In another column Mr F. M. Ross (late of Feilding) announces that he has taken over the Hotel. It ia the new proprietor's intention to have the hotel renovated, and made thoroughly up-to-date in every respeot. Speight's well-known beer will in future be supplied, and the best wines, spirits and ales will be stocked. The stabling accommodation will be under the personal supervision of Mr Ross, and in this connection the travelling public are reminded that their requirements -will receive special attention.

The Masterton police yesterday received a telegram from the police at Taihape stating that Mr J. W. Leahey had been killed by a railway track at Taihape. The deceased's widow is a resident of Masterton.
At the meeting of the Masterton Borough Council, last evening, Cr Ewington stated that he would lik« to see ratepayers attend the meetings of theCounoil. He was sure the woik of the Council would stand criticism.
The following appointments have been made by the Wellington Education Board:—Mr E. King, to Kaiwaiwii; Mrs M. Barak, to be sole teaoher at Tauheremkan; Miss L. Smith of Hast well, to be assistant at Parkvale; Miss 0. Zohrab, of Hukanui, to be assistant at Newtown.
The Hon. J. MoGowan, the Minister in charge of the Exhibition, has received a cablegram from the High Oomruisoioner, stating that so many important artists in the United kingdom are anxious to send out their pictures to the Exhibition that he has found it necessary to ask for an additional room in the Art Gallery, to bo reserved for this purpose. The position now is that nine rooms in the Art Gallery are being reserved for pictures from the United Kingdom. New Zealand artists at. present in England have made representation to the High Commissioner desiring; that space in the Art Gallery should be piaoed at their disposal on the same terms as it is being reserved for British and Continental artists. Unfortunately, this oonceHsion cannot be granted, as the whole of the Art Gallery that has been reserved for British artists has been filled, and that not taken up by them has all been allotted to the Australasian Arc societies.
