MASTERTON LICENSING COMMITTEE.
ANNUAL MEETING. The annual'meeting of the Masterton Licensing Committee was held yesterday. There were present:—Messrs |W. P. JQames, cLM. (ohairman), 0. E. Dnniell, E. MoEwen, J. Hess'ey, P. 0. Tumor and F. Bright.
TRANSFERS. Applications, for transfers were granted as follows:—Central Hotel, R. J. Hodgins to F. S. Cooper; Mulgrave Hotel, Dreyerton, A. Wakemau to F. Johnston; Marine Hotel, Whakataki, H. Cole to W. Roigard; Club Hotel, Eketahuna, H. MoManaway to A. Manguson.
RENEWALS. Applications for renewals of licenses were granted inrtbe following oases without objections:—Occidental Hotel, Masterton (J. O'Meara); Queen's Hotel, Masterton (J. O'Neill); Club Hotel, Masterton (A. G. Sorimgeour); Central Hotel, Masterton (F. S. Coouer); Mauriceville Hotel (Hans Hoffeins); Mulgrave Hotel, Dreyerton (F. Johnston). Renewals of wholesale licenses were granted to the W.F.CA. and Levin and Co., Ltd. The application of F. Seymour for a renewal of the license of the Eketahuna Hotel wbb adjourned until the next quarterly meeting of the Committee.
The license of the Hamua Junction Hotel was renewed on condition that certain minor alterations recommended by the Health Officer were carried cut.
Henry Johnston was granted a renewal of his license o f the Alfredton Hotel on condition that he attended to certain improvements required on the premises. f i \With regard to the Tinui Hotel the Health Officer reported that the iuside of the hotel needed renovating, and a new verandah was also required. Mr Pownall, who appeared for the applicant, stated that as negotiations were proceeding both for the sale of the freehold and the lease of the hotel, the question arose as to who was going to carry out the repairs.
The Committee adjourned the application until the next quarterly meeting, and in the meantime plans were ordered to be submitted for a new building. The Chairman stated that the Committee did not require a large building, but one suitable for the purpose.
With regard to the Marine Hotel, Whakataki, it was decided to adjourn the application, but ordered that plans for a nevt building he submitted before the next quarterly meeting. The police recommended with regard to the Prince of Wales Hotel, Mastqrton, that the front portion of the building be pulled down and a brick, building erected in its plaoe at once.
The Health Offloer repotted that the nouse was liept scrupulously olean, but the rear portion of the building was out of date. The whole of the left wing might reasonably be condemned and rebuilt. Mr Pownall, who appeared for the applioant, said that the hotel building was perfectly good, and that the owner thought that a new building would bej more for ornament than use. He suggested that the matter of rebuilding might be held over for twelve months, and he would undertake to have the plans for a new building prepared for the next annual meeting. The Chairman said that Masterton was a growing towu, and the hotels must keep up with the times. Hotels that suited the town in former years would not do now. The Committee decided to adourn the application of the license until 'the next quarterly meeting, and in the meantime ordered ' plana for a 1 new building to be prepared. Regarding the Empire Hotel, Masterton, the police reported that a new briok building was required. Tne Health Officer reported that the inside of the building required thoroughly overhauling. It would be possible, to make it a good building by repairing it. The stables at the hotel also required repairing."
Mr Pownnll explained that the owners had practically decided to erect a new building.' He asked the Committee not to order the plans t,o be submitted until the March meeting of the Committee, as Mr Cress' lease expired iu January. The building then could bo gone on with.
The Committee ordered the plays of a new building to bo submitted at the next quarterly meeting, and the application for the renewal of the lioense was* adjourned until that meeting.
The application for the renewal of the license of the Club Hotel, Eketahuua, was adjourned till the next quarterly meeting, to allow of arrangements oeing made in connection with the drainage of the hotel. With reference to the Bailway Hotel, JUketahuna, the police reported that the billiard room of the hotel bad been leased to another man, who kept it very untidy. The Chairman said it was doubtful whether a publican bad power to sub-lease the billiard room attached to his premises. The licensee undertook to remedy the state of affairs, and the application for the renewal of the license was granted. The Health Officer recommended with regard to the Eaufurly Hotel, Eketabuaa, that the £ l, ack portion be pulled down and other general improvements affeoted.
The application for the renewal'of the license was adjourned until the next quarterly meeting, and in the meantime plans were urdered to be submitted for the erection of a new back portion to the hbtel.
