It is understood that several tenders have beeu received for the English mail service, but nj firm or company hBS availed itself of the opportunity to lodge a tender contingent upon the construction of vessels for the service. Cabinet has not dealt with the tenders.

A BRILLIANT METEOR.

A brilliant meteor was widely seen at Dalby, and was accompanied by a rumble like distant thunder. The concussion caused dwellings in the vicinity to rattle.

AUSTRALIAN CARGO SERVICE.

Received June 7, 8.32 a.m. SYDNEY, June 7. Advices have been received that the Peninsular and Oriental Company inaugurates a monthly o argo servioe to Australia in November. Four eight-thousand ton vessels will be employed. The Poona will be the first steamer despatched.

FOREIGN EMIGRANTS.I

The Badapesth cable message is supposed to refer to a recent scheme for the settlement of a large number of Austro-Hungarian agriculturists in Queensland, conduoted with the Government by a Hungarian resident, Mr Maokay, who piloted a small company of emigrants here. The larger soheme did not mature.

EXTERMINATION OF RABBITS.

Dr Tidswell's report to the Federal Government states thnt Dr Danysz has brought only one kind of microbe. It is made to acquire special viruleboe with rabbits, and is not virulent with other domestic animals. In the bauds of competent persons, the laboratory observations can be conducted without danger to man or animals other than those experimented upon.

RECIPROCITY NEGOTIATIONS.

The Federal Cabinet has further discussed the question of preference with New Zealand. Mr Deakin states that certain suggestions are under review, and will be submitted to Mr Seddon to-day. After the Cabinet consideration of the proposals of prefereuoe between New Zealand and the Commonwealth, Mr Deakin and Sir William Lyne further conferred with Mr Seddon this morning: The whole scheme was carefully gone through, and it was found necessary to refer the question back, to a special meeting of Cabinet, to be held after tne opening of Parliament. **

Mr Seddon, in' consequence, deferred his departure for Sydney till to-morrow. •■'■■

The Ivanhoß was stranded ou a reef at Ata Island while landing returned Kanakas. Her position is bad, and as the natives were becoming troublesome it was decided to abandon the vessel.

MR SEDDON'S VIEWS,

With reference to the War Office's decision regarding colonial tinned meat, Mr aeddon sayß that there ought now to be an opportunity for New Zealand to bring under the notice ot the British Government and British consumers the advantage of having' colonial -meat, frozen, ohilled or tinned. Mr Seddon has communicated with the British Government, through the Governor, and with Mr W. P. Reeves. : Mr Seddon states that there is no place in the world where the same rigid inspection of slaughtering obtains as in New Zealand, Every abattoir is under Government inspection. If there is the slightest sign, taint or disease the meat is condemned. The inspection and grading costs New Zealand £20,000 a-year. The same care is exercised with tinned meats. Not only that, but the best meats orily «e sent Home. The only complaint is that Now Zealand meat is overweight. Jfoor meat is not allowed to bo exported.
