Sir John Forrest states that he is absolutely opposed to Federal land taxation. VERDICT OF WILFUL MURDER. Received June 4, 9.30 a.m. ADELAIDE, June 4. A verdict of wilful murder has been returned against Calder, the first mate of the ship Blaokbraes, for shooting Ledonx, the second mate. PLAGUE. Received June 4, 9.30 a.m. FREMANTLE, June 4. ~~ Another case of plague has been reported here. UNEMPLOYED Iw MELBOURNE. Received June 4, 9.55 a.m. MELBOURNE, June 4. Two hnndred and fifty unemployed, headed by Mr Tom Mann, attended a morning service at the Anglican Cathedral Bishop Clarke's sympathetic address, dealing with labour questions was punctuated by numerous pertinent exclamations of approval from the unemployed. NEW SOUTH WALES DRINK BILL. Received Jane 4, 9.45 p.m. SYDNEY, June 4. The New South Wales drink bill last year showed an increase of £71,472, but allowing for _ the increase in population, this is a decrease of fivepenoe per head. Every man, woman and child in the State is credited with an expenditure of £3 Is 3d in liquid refreshments during the year. A HOLIDAY. Received June 4, 11.59 p.m. SYDNEY, June 4. A holiday was generally observed to-day. MK SEDDON'S VISIT. Reeived June 5, 12.53 a.m. MELBOURNE June 4. A meeting took place this morning between Messrs Deakin, Lyne and Seddon. The matters previously discussed by Mr Seddon with Mr Deakin <vere gone through, and it was decided to continue , the conference to-morrow morning. Mr Seddon attended the races at Flemington to-day. He thinks the course surpassed anything he ever saw, and the equipment was very complete. The last time he was on the course was forty years ago, when Volunteer and Taragon ran a dead heat for the Championship. Mr Seddon ' and Family lunched with the Governor and Lady Talbot. The New Zealanders' social to Mr Seddon took place in the Grand Hotel, to-night. • Two hundred were present, and the proceedings were enthusiastic. COMMENTS BY THE NEWSPAPERS. Received June 5, 1 a.m. MELBOURNE, June 4. The Argus and Age both publish articles on Mr Seddon*s views with regard to the New Hebrides. The Argua says that his vigorous remarks will find a ready respouse in the hearts of loyal Australians because they appeal to the patriotic instincts of an Imperial race. Mr Seddon never hesitates to put his own views strongly and persistently. The 4go says that Mr Seddon deserves the tuanks of the Commonwealth. He went straight to the point, and with admirable directness tore aside the diplomatic veil that had hitherto cloaked the movements of the imperial authorities in their dealings with the New Hebrides, arid revealed the culprits responsible for the mischief done. Both papers have alao articles en the question of reciprocity.
