MAURICEVILLE COUNTY COUNCIL.

The Council met on Saturday, there being present—Crß J. C. Cooper (ohairman,, C. C. Jackson, and C. A. Wall. Apologies for absence were received from Crs Heckler and Dagg. The Chief Engineer of Roads forwarded a copy ot Gazette notica of the Order in Council declaring the Ma kaki-Kaiparoro Road a County road. Mr F. A. Sheath wrote informing the Council that he intended to use a two-horse waggon, with four-inch tyres, for conveying timber from his mill on Bowen Road s and that only light loads would be carried. The Clerk was instructed to notify all men in charge of roads to furnish monthly reports. Mr J. Braddick was authorised to put a man on Bowen Road to clean water-tables. Considerable discussion took place respecting the proposed apportioning of the cost of maintaining j the | suspension bridge over the Ruamahanga River at Mount Bruce Road. it was stated that the bridge was ■ erected chiefly to accommodate a laige number uf settlers in the Eketnbuna aud Mastertou Counties, while only a few isolated settlers in Mauriceville were in any way benefitted by the bridge. Therefore no apportionment of the cost of maintenance will be equitable unless the Eketahuna County bear an equal share with Mauriceville. The Chairman's action in ordering timber for additions to the roadman's hut was approved. The Chairman gave notice that he would move at the next meeting that a general rate of one penny in the pound be fetruck for the current year. He would also move that casual men employed on the roads be paid at the rate of 8s per day. It WB9 decided to apjroiufc Mr M. Rundell as ranger on the roads under his charge. Consideration was given to a resolution forwarded by the "Stratford County Council in which it is proposed to ask the Government to place local bodies in a better position to deal with "unfair" traffic ou roads. The intention of the resolution was approved, but it was thought thac it should have mor© explicitly stated what the Government was to be asked to do. The resignation of Mr Adolph Larsen as ranger was accepted. Accounts amounting to £9O 3s 8d were passed for payment.
