In connection with the charges against Chioago packers nf using chemicals and diseased meat, and selling to Americans unwholesome food, which they were unable to export, it ip alleged that hogs dying of cholera were converted into lard and grease for sardine oil. Putrefied hams were chemically rendered odourless, bad meat' was dyed, and petted bam made from mouldy heef. Further, it is stated that cattle dying of disease were converted into tiuned beef, and sausages made from floor scrapings. When operatives were mutilated the machinery was not stopped, and the lumps of human flesh were allowed to be mixed with the canned food and sausages. The revelations made in Mr Upton Sinclair's novel "The Jungle" have induced President Roosevelt to send commissioners to investigate Chioago methods. Their report which is to form the basis of legislation is to be immediately submitted. ;
