In the double—Empire and Royal Handicaps—the winning horses were Waipuna and Ben Blair; and though only two tickets were issued on the number represented by those two horses it was not actually the outside selection. Only one ticket was issued against the combination of Waipuna and Miss Winnie, and as the latter was les9 than half a-neok away from the two leaders it will be readily recognised that it was only by a narrow shave that a dividend twice the extent of that paid was not recorded. At the South Australian Jockey Club's Annual Meeting, held in May, 1881, a horse who raced under the initials of his owner, "D.0.D.", won the Goodwood Handicap, and a dividend of £836 was the result. An exohange commenting on the matter stated:—"Great excitement was caused owing to a mistake made in working the totalisator. When the Goodwood Handicap was over the machine fih'owed that of £904 invested no one had backed the winner. Directly afterwards, however, a winning ticket was presented, duly embossei, and Mr Barnard endeavoured, to explain to the crowd that the mistake arose in consequence of the number being suown in- the wrong compartment. The crowd refused to hear him at first, but eventually they were partially satisfied, Mr Smith, a farmer, was the lucky holder of the tioket, and he received £836 for the £1 which be invested.''
