WELLINGTON. WELLINGTON, May 25. When the divorce suit of Jeremiah Stevenson versus Nellie Stevanson and Hastings Russell (co respondent) was called at the Supreme Court today counsel for the respondent made application to have the case heard in camera. His Honor the Chief Justioe said be had always laid down a rule that where bhildren were concerned there ought to be no publication, and following the precedent laid down by Justice Denniston at Cbristcburch,. he granted counsel's request. AUCKLAND. AUCKLAND, May 25. 4t the Supreme Court, before* Judge Edwards, William Smith and Alice Simeon, who had been living together, pleaded guilty of breaking and entering a shnp and stealing, among other things, 84 farthings. Smith was found guilty on two other charges of attempting to maim, disarm or disable or do actual bodily harm to Constable CoppeJl; and further that Smith intended to do actual bodily harm by discharging a loaded revolver. Smith was found notjjguilty on the main charge of attempted murder. The evidence showed that in March last, Smith and Alice Simeon broke into a shop in Auckland and on leaving it Constable Ccppell and a watchman named Robert White happened to be walking along the footpath. The constable grabbed at, but missed, Smith, and a pursuit took place. Smith fired twice at Constable Coppell, but missed. Smith was eventually secured by the constable. The prisoner declared he had no intention of harming the policeman. The Judge considered ibe offence a most dastardly one, and it was absolutely neoessary to proteot a constable, who had to capture sucb a desperate oriminals, and prisoners need not expeot mercy in such cases. ' For breaking and entering a sentence of two years' hard labour was imposed on Smith, and on the other charges Smith was sentenced to ten years imprisonment, the sentences to be ooncurient. Alioe Simeon, who had aided justioe by making a oonfession, was admitted to probation for two years.
