The funeral took plaoe on Thursday. It jb believed that 85 to 90 per cent, of the butter factories and producers in Victoria are opposed to the system of grading and working under the Commerce Act. Messrs Edwiu Feist and J. A. Eenall have been re-eleoted Trustees of the Masterton Trust Lands Trust. There were no other candidates. Messrs G. Heron and D. The Star Crioket Club intend holding their annual social and dance on June 21st. At Oaraarn, yesterday, Harry Walter Worley, rleaded guilty at tbe Magistrate's Court to stealing the sum of £149 7s Id, the property of his employer, David Dunn. Accused pleaded guilty and Was committed for sentence.—-Association.. The morning and evening services in the Masterton Presbyterian Church to-morrow will be conducted by the Rev. James * Clarke, who will also take the Wangaebu service at 2.30 p.m. Mr K. Asbton will conduct service at Dreyerton at 3 o'clock. An Oamara telegram, last evening, stated that Captain J. P. Crawford, aged 90 years, died at Oamaru, on Thursday. He came to the colony in 1868.1 He was for three years manager of the old Christohurch Brewery Company, and subsequently harbour-master at Timaru, where he built the first breakwater. Tbe returns for tbe fourth week of the iNew Zealand Utility Poultry Club's Egg-laying Competition at Lincoln College show that 477 eggs were laid during the week, making a grand total of 1,516. At the annbal gathering of the Kaitara Sohool, Wairarapa, before the presentation of prizes, the Rev. Mr Brown, on behalf of the committee, presented the sohool-mis-tress, Miss Dowdeswell, with a handsome set of silver toilet requisites, and an address of appreciation on the oocasion of the completion of her sixth year as teacher of the sohool. Miss Dowdeswell, to whom the gift came as a surprise, made an appropriate response. The school has a goodjreoord. This year all tbe children passed, and the dux, James MacNamara gainwd 500 inspector marks. , A meeting of the JBorough Library and Fire Brigade Committee was held last evening. There were present—Crs E. Feist (chair), E. McEwen, J. Elliot and T, G. Hoar. The Librarian reported that there were 4,912 books in tbe library at present. During the month 1,500 books were lent, including 1460 works of fiotion. The number of subscribers was 299. The amount of subscriptions reoeived for the month was £lO 2s 6d—ratepayers £4, nonratepayers £6 2s 6d. Aaoouuts amounting to £l9 2s 6d were passed for payment. Tbe financial statement to date showed a debit balance of £144 lis Id, including the above accounts. It was decided to appoint two members of the committee each month aot as a book seleotion committee, the Chairman and Cr Hoar being appointed for the ensuing month. Mr Selfe, the New Zealand manager of the Eastern Extension Company, states that the steamer Recorder picked up the New Zealand end of one of the broken oables at 9,45 pm. last night. Theßeaorder experienced severe weather, a fierce gale blowing for thirty-six boars. The ship's gear was washed about, bat no one was injured.—Association. At the inquest held at Petooe on Thursday afternoon on the death of the lad Edgar Rowe, who while playing dropped a distance of about 6ft from the branch of a tree, landing on his feet, and fell dead a few minutes' lazier, the evidence of Dr. Stewart, who had held a post mortem examination, showed that death was due to a fracture of the base of the skull causing hemorrhage of the brain. A verdict was returned in accordance with the medical testimony. Speaking of the systems of "oraru" at educational institutions Professor Haslam, of Canterbury College remarked that "the only share the modern parent took in the education of the child was to wash its face before going to school and oat its lunch; naving done that parents fell back in comfortable assurance that no more oould reasonably be expected. A charge against Harry Fawcett of the thtft of a bicycle lamp, valued at ss, the property of *»ohn J. Kelliher, was dismissed. James Clair and Michael Morrisy were charged having atsaulted Samuel Azale, on the 22nd inst. Clair was fined £5 and costs 5s 6d, in default one month's imprisonment, and Morrisy was fined 40s and costs ss, in default 14 day's imprisonment. An order was made against Ernest Frederick Buckthought for the payment of 10s per week the Support of his wife, Catherine Grace Bnofctbougbt. The payments are to be made'fortnightly. The fortnightly meeting of Court Loyal Enterprise, A.0.F., was held last evening in the Foresters' Hall, Bro. F. Fear, C.R., presiding. Bro. B. MoEwen, a member of Court Star of the South Inveroargill, paid a visit to the Court. The Secretary ( of Court Sir George Grey, A.0.F., Wellington, wrote asking that a member of the Court who had taken ud his residence in Masterton should be placed on the surgeon's list. The Secretary of Court Star of Canterbury, A.0.F., Ohristobarob, wrote refunding £4 6s> Bd, siok pay advanced to one of their members. It was decided to aocept a member from Court Pahiatua on production of medical certificate. Accounts amounting to £2 8s 6d were passed for payment. A brief discussion took place amongst the members of the Lodge with reference to the business transacted at the sitting of toe Friendly Sooieties Conference at Wellington. Atkinson, land and stock agent, Feilding, advertises particulars of a farm of 400 acres on the Main Trunk Line. One hundred and fifty acres are at present in grass and fenced. The farm is situated six miles from the Main Trunk railway line. Jn connection with Mr A. Henderson's rednotion sale, speoial bargains are being offered in ladies' gold and silver watches, muff chains, dress rings, clocks, and silver and electroplate roods. The shoo is overstocked with these goods, and the bargains will be available up till Wednesday, May 30th. The renovation of the shop will be completed by the end of this month.
