FAKED BUTTER. PALMERSTON N., May 23. Two boxes of "faked" butter, procured in London on aacount of the Manawatu A. and P. Association, by Mr J. T. Lang, have been shipped by the Waiwera, consigned to the cold store 3n Wellington, where they will remain till the time of the coming Winter Show. One box oontaius twelve pounds of butter in two-pound rolls, and was being retailed in London at Is 2d per lb. This sample contains water to the extent of 15.42 per cent. The other box also contains twelve pounds of butter in two-pound rolls, and was being retailed in London at is per lb. It contains water to the extent of 29.38 percent. 5 CRIMINAL LIBEL. AUCKLAND, May 22. A man named James Regan, a newspaper proprietor, was sentenced to a month's imprisonment without hard labour, on a charge of criminally libelling Dr Beatty, Superintendent of the Auckland Mental Hospital. Mr Justice Chapman gave full , weight to the faot that the prisoner had been misled by a plausible person, and that an ample apology was published, but the only punishment suitable for a libel of such a gross oharaoter was imprisonment. POVERTY" BAY PROVINCE. j GISBORNE, May 22. The annual Provincial Conference of the Poverty Bay Farmers' Union took place yesterday. Mr W. K. Chambers was re-elected president, and Mr A. R. Watson vice-president. The following were elected to form the executive:—Messrs W. K. Chambers, A. R. Watson, 1 H. E. Kent, J. Hutchinson, A. Hegarty, W. D. Lysnar, T. iiilliott, D. B. Watt, A. J. Cameron, J. J. Caesar, G. Redpath, T. Holden, W L. Clayton, and A. H. Wallis. Tbe resolutions passed inoluded one asking that the duty on potatoes should be removed during the existence of the blight. It was also resolved that, as there is great scaroity of labour all over tbe colony, the colonial executive might, to some extent, improve the position by circular letter to English papers seating forth tbe kind of men most required, probable wages, and the best time to arrive in tbe colony; « that the . Government be again urged to appoint a representative of ratepayers on the Assessment Court, branohes of the union to set up,committees in the meantime to adjust valuations in different localities ;that the Government be asked to place a vote of £150,000 on the Estimates to push on the Gisborne-Rotorua railway, and that the desirability of speedy settlement of native lands be urged on the authorities.
