RESULTS Ol< SATURDAY'S MATCHES. Masterton 1., 3; Red Star 1, 0. Had Star 11., 3; Masterton 11, U. Albion 1. forfeited to Carterton I. SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP. ED STAR v. MASTERTON. Tlift Masterton and Red Star Seniors niot on the Showgrounds on Saturday. There was a large attendance of the public. The ground was on the "greaey" side, owing to the showers of rain that had fallen earlkr in the day. As was expected the game was a closely contested one. The "barracking" was reminiscent of the days when the old Red Star end Masterton teams met. A speoial featuro of the game was the friendly apirit iu which it/was played. Though a willing "go" there was an absence of any rough play. Welch, one of th« Red Star threequartors. was "knocked out" in the first apeil. and shortly afterwards Millar, of the Masterton team, •collided with O'Connell, the Star half-back. O'Connell was soverely injured, and had to retire. In a true sportsmanlike manner D. Lo gan, the Masterton captain, at once allowed the Stars to play A. Marsh as a substitute. The following were thetoams:—• Masterton--Fullback, Hatch; threequarters, Baker, J. O'Leary and Millar; five-eighth, P. O'Lrary; halfback, D. Logan (captain); wings, Spackman and Gray; forwards, Jenkins, Marchant, Lyall Osborne, McKellar, King, Duggan. Red Star: Fullback, Walker; threequarters, McLachlan, Wrigley (captain) and Welch; five eighth, Darville; halfback, J. O'Connell (substitute A. Marsh); wiugs, 13. War- ( ner. Rose; forwards, O. Clarke, Mckenzie, Templeton, Scorrar, Fulton, F. Clarke, R. Hunt. ■ "Bed Star won the toes and played with the wind behind them in the first spell. Hardly had the ball ( been set in motion than the Masterton backs got on a passing rush from which, owing to the Star backs being out of their places, Millar scored in the corner. The kick at goal failed. Masterton 3. Red Stars nil. Masterton continued tp attack, | and for a time the Stars were kept bußy defending. Jenkins, Gray and Duggan put in fine work in the Masterton forwards, and through their efforts the ball was worked towards the Star line. Gradually the Stars worked the ball back, and Templetou, McKenzie and Fulton shifted the play to the centre, where it remained for a time. Give and j take play followed. Play was fairly even for the rest of the spell, JYlaa- j terton perhaps having slightly the best of it. The most noticeable feature of the spell was a magnificent run by Wrigley to the line. It I was generally thought that he had soored, and a great cheer went up from the crowd. On cbanglcg ends the Stars made the play "willing," their forwards doing fine work. The Stars had considerably the best of the spell, and woulcl probably have soored, but for the fine defensive work of eome of the Masterton backs, J. O'Leary in particular being notice- , able for the manner in whioh he repeatedly saved his side. There was no soore iu the spell, and the game ended— Masterton 3. Red Star nil. Mr E. McKenzie was referee, and Messrs W. lorns and T. Fielding were the line umpires. On tbeiday's play there was nothing to choose between the teams, they being evenly matched. The Red Star forwards were superior to the Masterton pack. They got round quickly an to Logan and P. O'Leary, and stopped any attempt at a passing rush amoug the Masterton backs. J. u'Leary P. O'Leary and Logan put in some very fine work Miller played the best gam'e he has yet played for Masterton, while Baker was very safe and made no mistabes. Gray, Duggan, Mackellar and Jenkins were the piok uf the Masterton forwarda. The Red Stars were severely handicapped through losing O'Connell, who, up till the time be was injured, was playing a grand game. Of the other backs Wrigley and Darville both played fine games. Walker, McLachlan and Welch were good on the defence, and kicked well. It would be bard to individualise the forwards, so well did they play, but McKenzie, Templeton, 0. Clarke and Fulton probably caught the eye most. Over £ll was taken at the gates. CARTERTON v. ALBION. ®This match was to have been played at Carterton on Saturday, but the Albioos were unable to get a team together, and forfeited the ' match. It is understood that the Albions have withdrawn for the Saturday competition. JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP. RED STAR v. MASTERTON.
